All speaker presentations will be prerecorded and will be hosted or linked from our meeting website. Materials will be available for viewing on the meeting date, and will be available for a minimum of 1 month afterwards.
Registration is required to view the speaker presentations. With registration web links to the material will be provided, as well as documentation that can be used for continuing education purposes.
Final approved hours awarded by all boards will be discussed in the Business Meeting, during the Organization and Policy Committee report.

Tiffany Allen

DSM Practitioner's Discussion

Tiffany Allen is the Soil Survey Office Leader for the MRLA 130B Southern Blue Ridge Soil Survey Office in Waynesville NC. She is also a Co-Chair of the USDA’s New Technology Committee. She was involved in the field mapping of several mountain counties as well as digital map production. She has been practicing soil science for 20 years with a specialty in GIS and soil map interpretation and analysis. She prides herself on the fact that her work helps people help the land.

Dr. Carl Crozier

Organic amendments and cadmium reduction management for smallholder cacao production

Research interests include understanding basic aspects of soil/plant interactions in agricultural systems that might lead to more efficient fertilizer use. Specific interests include N cycling in agricultural systems, characterizing soil microenvironments, the chemistry and management of organic soils, and developing precision fertilizer management schemes.

Luke Gatiboni

Luke Gatiboni as an Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist in soil fertility and nutrient management. He has several research focuses such as maximizing crop yields and fertilizer use while minimizing nutrient losses, maintaining long term fertilization field trials throughout North Carolina, developing Best Management Practices for nutrient management, and supporting the NC Cooperative Extension.

Prior to joining the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, Luke spent 15 years at Santa Catarina State University in Brazil researching and teaching on soil fertility.

Ron Heiniger

Effect of cropping system on root development and canopy temperature

Dr. Ronnie W. Heiniger received a P.h.D. in Crop Ecology and Simulation Modeling from Kansas State University in 1994. He has received the Gerald O. Mott Meritorious Research Award from the Crop Science Society of America for modeling grain fill in sorghum. Dr. Heiniger’s applied research programs in the areas of precision agriculture and remote sensing at North Carolina State University have received national recognition. In addition to his research work, Dr. Heiniger is the Corn Extension Specialist for North Carolina.

Dr. Heiniger is located at the Vernon G. James Research and Extension Center, a modern research facility in eastern North Carolina.

Stephanie Kulesza

Weed Seeds in Compost and Litter

Dr. Kulesza works with various manures and byproducts generated by animal ag industries to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of their use in the diverse cropping systems of North Carolina.

Currently, Dr. Kulesza’s research focuses on utilizing manure in various crops and crop rotations, identifying optimum application rates to maximize crop yield and quality while minimizing potential environmental impacts.

Dr. Sarah Lyons

Fertilization Recommendation Support Tool (FRST)

Dr. Natalie Nelson is the Principal Investigator of the Biosystems Analytics Lab in the Biological and Agricultural Engineering Department at NC State. She received her Ph.D. in Agricultural and Biological Engineering from the University of Florida with the support of a NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, and she has conducted research at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center as a Research Affiliate and NSF Graduate Research Intern. Dr. Nelson joined BAE in August 2017.


Dr. Merrin Macrae

Phosphorus movement in soils

Merrin has research interests in the linkages between hydroclimatology, biogeochemical cycling and surface-water chemistry in both natural and impacted systems under variable climatic regimes and following disturbance or land use change. Her work is largely in agricultural watersheds and wetland ecosystems

Dr. Manda is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences and the Director of the Natural Resources and Environmental Research Cluster at ECU.

Deanna Osmond

Fertilization Recommendation Support Tool (FRST)

Dr. Osmond's areas of expertise are Soil Fertility, Nutrient Management, Conservation Practices and Water Quality. Her research is focused on agricultural production, reduction of agricultural pollutants through the use of conservation practices including riparian buffers and the development of decision support systems that both function at the watershed-scale and are applicable to field-scale soil fertility issues. These systems are designed to allow maximum user flexibility, yet to provide reliable information and answers.

Dr. Matthew Vann

In 2015, Dr. Vann was appointed to the Dr. William K. Collins Tobacco Agronomist Position in Research, Teaching, and Extension Endowment. His responsibilities include teaching tobacco production courses in both the two (CS 116) and four year (CS 216) programs at NC State University, advising M.S. and Ph.D. level graduate students, supporting the efforts of Cooperative Extension Agents with tobacco responsibilities, directing Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) training for North Carolina tobacco farmers, and providing timely Extension information to allied industry.
