Health and Safety Plan
South Side Area School District is excited to welcome our students back to full-time, in-person learning for the 2021-2022 school year. Building-specific information will be released to families in August 2021.
Asynchronous learning opportunities can be available for students. Families interested in asynchronous learning will be required to submit an application to the administrative team for approval for this learning opportunity. Eligibility to remain enrolled in asynchronous learning will be periodically reviewed by the educational team. Information on the application process will be forthcoming.
The district will continue to receive information from the PA Department of Education, PA Department of Health and CDC regarding face coverings. Should staff or students choose to wear face coverings, parents/guardians are responsible for providing face coverings for their child.
All students and staff will be reminded about proper hygiene practices via presentations, signs in visible areas, and verbal reminders. Alcohol-based sanitizers will be widely available in classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, offices, other common areas, and throughout the building. Where applicable, marquee signs, smartboards, and TVs located in highly visible areas may convey simple reminders.
As per the January 29, 2021 CDC order, face coverings are required to ride the school bus. If the order is lifted, the requirement for face coverings on busses will become optional.
As of May 31, 2021, physical distancing and capacity restrictions are no longer a requirement. The district will continue to receive information from the CDC and PA Department of Health regarding physical distancing.
The South Side Area School District is a 1:1 school district. All students will be provided with district-issued technology. All students will be provided with the same technological resources.
Traditional physical education classes will resume for the 2021-2022 school year. The locker rooms will be used for the middle and high school students to change before and after gym class.
As of May 31, 2021, physical distancing and capacity restrictions are no longer a requirement. The district will continue to receive information from the CDC and PA Department of Health regarding physical distancing.
Vaccinations are a personal choice. The district will continue to pass along information regarding vaccination opportunities for staff, students, and families as it becomes available.
Staff and students will be encouraged to complete a self-assessment for COVID-19 symptoms prior to leaving for work or school. School nurses will monitor staff and students who may show symptoms of COVID-19 to include isolation of any staff or students who show symptoms upon arrival to school until they can be transported out of the building.
The South Side Area School District is currently offering the seamless summer option for the 2021-2022 school year similar to the 2020-2021. This option allows the district to provide free meals to all students regardless of lunch status. The South Side Area School District plans to apply for any future waivers offered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Volunteers will be permitted in the school when deemed appropriate by the District Health and Safety Team*.
The South Side Area School District will continue to monitor and review recommendations from the PA Department of Health.
In line with CDC recommendations, the SSASD custodial staff is preparing for the return of staff and students to in-person learning. Staff have been trained on PPE and cleaning procedures. Supplies of hospital grade disinfectants and cleaning supplies, hand sanitizers, and all other PPE have been ordered and received to successfully reopen school. The facilities department is in continual contact with the district administration and school health department to ensure the proper preventative measures are being taken to address possible exposure to COVID-19 in the schools. The protocols for sanitizing are in place for the 2021-2022 school year.
