After your child is finished reading each night, I encourage you to ask them questions about what they read to improve comprehension skills and so that you can see if they are understanding what they are reading.
Here are some questions you can ask:
Predictions: Stop them partially through the story and ask: 1. Think about the title, the pictures you have seen and what you have read so far. Tell me 3 things that might happen in the rest of the story.
Retelling: Start at the beginning and tell me what happened in this story. Responses should be detailed, naming characters by name, and in sequential order.
Interpretation: What do you think the author is trying to tell you in this story? (is there a lesson) What is the author's purpose of writing this story? (to persuade, to inform, or to entertain?)
Reflection: What do you think is the most important thing that happened in the story? Why do you think that was important? (this should make sense)
Questions for Informational Text:
After reading the table of contents or taking a picture walk: What are three questions you think may be answered as you read this book?
After reading a section or an entire text: Please tell me two important facts.
After reading the entire text: What is the most important thing you learned from reading this book? Why do you think it is important?
