Transitions & Careers is a Family & Consumer Science exploratory class offered at Brookside Middle School. In this Family & Consumer Science class, students will learn practical life skills that will help in preparing them for their future, whether it is pursuing higher education or finding a job right after high school.
Transitions & Careers is offered to both 7th and 8th graders at the middle school however the topics covered are slightly different. Taken both years, the curriculum provides a great opportunity for students to learn more about themselves, discover and explore career interests, help identify a plan to achieve their career goals and learn skills to help them achieve their career goals along the way.
In 7th grade, students will cover topics such as study skills, personal values, goal setting, personality and how it relates to career choices, career interests and exploration, professional and personal skills including communication and leadership.
In 8th grade, students will cover effective decision making steps, identify personal career interests and career values, explore post-secondary educational and career pathways, write a resume, learn effective interview and employability skills and social media awareness.
Family and Consumer Science (FCS) focuses on the science and the art of living and working well in our complex world. FCS education provides students with instruction and knowledge to make informed decisions using the critical science approach and practical problem reasoning skills. Students are able to take the knowledge and skills learned within the classroom and expand the learning past school walls and into the community to make a difference.
Brookside Middle School currently only offers two FCS courses: Transitions & Careers 7 and Transitions & Careers 8.
Brookside High School, however, offers a variety of FCS courses. These courses are offered at different times and vary by year. They include: Principles of Food; R.A.T.S Food Science (Reactions, Appearance, Taste, Smell); Culinary Fundamentals; Global Foods; Nutrition and Wellness; Personal Wellness and Development; Personal Wellness; Human Growth and Development; Child Development; Interior Design, Furnishings and Management; and Textile Design, Construction and Maintenance.
