Here's some background the Write Tools, our writing curriculum if you'd like more information about how we've been teaching writing.
Each week, I will give you a prompt to work on throughout the week. On Friday, type your paragraph into the form below, or take a photo of it, and send it to me. Here is how you can split up the writing routine throughout the week.
Monday = Read the prompt. Brainstorm ideas by making a list, a bubble map, etc.
Tuesday = Choose three details from your brainstorm. Make your plan. Then write your topic and conclusion sentences.
Wednesday = Write your draft on a piece of paper in complete sentences.
Thursday = Reread your plan and revise it. Have a family member look over it, if possible.
Friday = Edit your plan, then type your writing into the form below, or take a photo of it and send it to me.
Week of 5/18: Since this is the last week of school, it's a good time to reflect, or think back, on how much you learned this year. Write me a letter describing at least three things you are proud of learning in second grade. Here is a form you can use to help you organize your ideas. Here's a reminder of the parts of a letter and stationary if you want to print it out and write your letter on paper. I can't wait to read your letter!
Week of 5/11: Last week you made a zine about your neighborhood. This week we will make maps showing locations of the places that make South City special to us. Click here to go the the Oakland Museum of California's website to see how to customize your SSF map. If you picked up your May envelope at school, you should have a copy of the SSF map my mom's boyfriend, Ben Pease, made for us to use. If you didn't pick up your envelope yet, the school is open Tuesdays & Thursdays 9 am-2pm. If you need another copy of the map, you can find it here.
Week of 5/4: Last week you took a walk around your neighborhood and found things that make it special. This week we're going to make zines about our neighborhoods. A zine (pronounced zeen), short for “magazine” or “fanzine”, is a homemade mini-magazine. Click here to go to the Oakland Museum of California's website to see how to make your own neighborhood zine. Instead of typing your writing into the form below, this week we will share our zines during our Zoom meeting on Friday. (Parents & guardians, when you pick up your child's May envelope at school, you will find a South City Map. Be sure to save that for next week's activity).
Week of 4/27: While we are sheltering in place, it's still important to get exercise and fresh air. Take a walk around your neighborhood and find at least 3 things that make your neighborhood special. Write a paragraph describing them.
Week of 4/20: Earth Day is on Wednesday, April 22. Since we can't do a service project together, read this article about different ways people celebrate Earth Day around the world. Write a paragraph telling about 3 ways you can celebrate Earth Day.
Week of 4/13: While we shelter in place, we are unable to go to some of the places we enjoy. Write a paragraph telling about a place you look forward to going to when shelter in place is over. Include details about why you want to go to this place or what you want to do there.
Week of 4/6: What are three things you miss about being at school? Use specific details to tell what it is that you miss about those things.
