Social Studies Curriculum
My World Interactive & Scholastic News
The first half of 2nd grade is focused on Social Studies concepts. We use My World Interactive! (by Pearson) to focus on communities and historical figures. We use Scholastic News magazines each Friday to learn about current events. Our topics include:
- Communities (urban, rural, suburban)
- Maps & Geography
- How citizens use natural resources
- Goods and services
- How to be a smart consumer
- Communities from long ago and how communities change
- Leaders and Historical Figures
- How to be a good citizen
- How communities share and help each other
We take two field trips that help enrich our social studies units!
- Colonial Plantation: This trip takes place in October. We learn about life in the colonial days and make candles, card wool, tour a house and farm, and play colonial games.
- Tour of Springfield: In December we will travel around Springfield and tour different places in our community. We will go to the library, township building, police office, and the traffic center.
