We use the same math program as the SLC! In 2nd grade, we will focus on the following areas:
Topic #1 - Fluently Add and Subtract Within 20
Students review and learn multiple strategies to add and subtract quickly. These include: Doubles and near doubles, Make a 10 to add, Addition fact patterns, Count on and count back to subtract, Think addition to subtract, Make a 10 to subtract, and Solve addition and subtraction word problems.
Topic # 2 - Work With Equal Groups
Students learn a foundation for multiplication by practicing with even and odd numbers, using arrays to find totals, and making arrays to find totals.
Topic # 3 - Add Within 100 Using Strategies
Students learn how to add tens and ones on a hundred chart and open number line. They also learn more advanced strategies such as breaking apart numbers to add and adding using compensation,
Topic # 4 - Fluently Add Within 100
Students use their strategies to add more quickly. We will add with partial sums and make models to add 2-digit numbers.
Topic # 5 - Subtract Within 100 Using Strategies
Students learn how to subtract tens and ones on a hundreds chart and open number line. They also learn more advanced strategies such as breaking apart numbers to subtract and subtracting using compensation.
Topic # 6 - Fluently Subtract Within 100
Students use their strategies to subtract more quickly. We will learn about regrouping to subtract 1-digit and 2-digit numbers as well as using addition to check subtraction.
Topic # 7 - More Solving Problems Involving Addition and Subtraction
This unit provides more practice in addition and subtraction, but it is specifically geared towards word problems.
Topic # 8 - Work With Time and Money
Students will solve problems with coins and dollar bills. They will also tell time to five minutes, tell time before and after the hour, and distinguish between A.M. and P.M.
Topic # 9 - Numbers to 1,000
Students learn about place value by modeling, naming, reading, and writing 3-digit numbers. They will also work with place-value patterns, skip count by 5s, 10s, and 100s, and compare numbers using place value and number lines.
Topic # 10 - Add Within 1,000 Using Models and Strategies
Students learn how to model and use strategies for adding 10 and 100 using previously taught addition strategies.
Topic # 11 - Subtract Within 1,000 Using Models and Strategies
Students learn how to model and use strategies for subtracting 10 and 100 using previously taught subtraction strategies.
Topic # 12 - Measuring Length
Students learn how to estimate length and measure and compare with inches, feet, yard, centimeters, and meters.
Topic # 13 - More Addition, Subtraction, and Length
Students continue practicing their addition and subtraction skills by applying them with measurements.
Topic # 14 - Graphs and Data
Students learn about line plots, bar graphs, and picture graphs. They also study how to analyze and draw conclusions from graphs.
Topic # 15 - Shapes and Their Attributes
Students learn the characteristics and how to draw 2-dimensional shapes, polygons, and angles. They also start a foundation for fractions by dividing rectangles into equal squares and learning about equal shares.
Step-Up to Third Grade
Students are introduced to concepts that they will learn in third grade (fractions, multiplication, division, and more place-value).
**Please note that some of these chapters will be completed out of order.**
Students have access to the Pearson website online. They can watch videos, use the virtual toolkit, download the homework, and see what is coming up in math.
