Social Studies

Our Social Studies curriculum helps our children learn about themselves and others as they begin to navigate the world outside their family. We use the Social Studies Alive curriculum.

One of the components of it is the Star of the Week program. Starting in October, each child will have the opportunity throughout the year to be the "Star of the Week" in our classroom.

Every Friday I will randomly select one AM and one PM student to be Star of the Week for the following week! You will get a letter with all of the information you need. On that week, the "Star" student gets to do many different activities:

Monday: Star of the Week Poster/Pictures

Please make a small poster with pictures (5-6) of your child as an infant, with his/her family (including pets), a current picture, and any other special pictures. These pictures should be displayed on a small poster board with one sentence under each picture. Please talk with your child about the pictures so that he/she can explain them to the class.

Tuesday: Show and Tell

Your child can bring in three items that fit in his/her backpack. Please be sure these things are appropriate to bring into school.

Wednesday: Interview and Questionnaire

Please fill out the attached questionnaire with your child. We will use this information to interview your child and talk about his/her favorite things.

Thursday: Special Star of the Week Snack

Please send in a special snack with your child that can be shared with the class. We kindly ask that you refer to the safe snack list. All baked goods should be store bought.

Friday: Adventure’s with Pete the Cat

Pete the Cat will be sent home with the child the Friday before the student is star of the week. Pete will be our class mascot. Along with Pete, I will send home a notebook. At some point during the week/weekend, please write an entry in the notebook about what Pete the Cate did while staying at your house. Have your child help you with the ideas (and some of the writing). You can even take a picture, or draw something, to give a better idea of what Pete did with your family. At the end of the week, the student will get to share this entry with the rest of the class!

Friday: Class Star of the Week Book

We will draw pictures of our star of the week and make a special book for your child!
