Algebra 1

Course Description

We will learn how to solve linear equations and inequalities, systems of linear equations and inequalities, quadratic equations, exponential functions, and polynomial equations. We will also write/graph linear functions and quadratic functions, use and apply properties of exponents, and analyzed data displays.

Student Responsibilities

You are required to bring to class each day:

1) A math binder (2 in.) or notebook and folder

2) Regular pencils and colored pencils (optional but helpful for distinguishing certain graphs).

3) A scientific or graphing calculator (TI30xs, TI-83 Plus or TI-84 is recommended).

4) A charged Chromebook.

5) Loose-leaf and graphing paper

If you miss class for ANY reason, it is your responsibility to obtain a copy of all notes, problems, assignments and any other important information from a classmate. You will have the opportunity to obtain the phone numbers of at least two classmates today. Contact them and find out what you missed before you return.

Classroom Etiquette

Cell phones are not permitted during the school day. IPods, MP3 players, and other electronic equipment should not be brought to school. If you disrupt your learning with a cell phone, mp3 player, etc, I will confiscate it and refer it to the discipline office. Please see the Springfield High School student handbook regarding this policy.

  • The curriculum has plenty of interactive, web-based activities where students will explore the mathematics. As such, there will be a decent amount of computer usage throughout the course. Students will be expected to remain on-task during these activities. .

Take care of personal needs prior to the beginning of class or during lunch.

We are a community of learners, and we will be respectful towards each other. Any disrespect will not be tolerated and dealt with accordingly.

When I am instructing, I expect you to be quietly paying attention and taking notes. The only acceptable talking is in the form of questions and discussion related to the math.

Grading System:

Tests/Quizzes (80%)

· Assessments will be noted in the Digital Lesson Plans.

· You have one week from an absence to make up an assessment.

Classwork (10%)

· You are required to make up all lessons and assignments when you return from absence. You can check online on Google Classroom or email Mr. Heaney to ask about the work you missed while you were out. At this point, if you need help, come and see me as soon as possible.

Homework (10%)

· Late homework will only be accepted for partial credit and can be turned into the “Late Homework” folder.

My email address is Patrick.Heaney@ssdcougars.org. Email is the best way to contact me, as I check email often.
