Superior Traffic Education Program
Classroom & Driving Policies and Procedures
Mrs. Hanson and Ms. Hopwood
The Superior High School Traffic Safety Education Program meets all standards required by the Montana Office of Public Instruction and is CDTP-certified by the State of Montana Motor Vehicle Division. This course is a partnership between those entities as well as the student, parent/legal guardians, and instructor. The instructor will use best practices to teach the student how to become a safe driver while the responsibility of upholding laws and practicing safe driving techniques will reside with the parent and ultimately on the student.
ATTENDANCE: Because this class is performance-based where a student must perform various tasks in both phases: classroom and Behind-the-wheel (BTW) driving, the student’s daily attendance is a necessity to the successful completion of the course. It is required by law that each student completes a minimum of 42 classroom hours. We understand busy summer schedules, but if a student misses MORE THAN TWO DAYS OF CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION, he or she will be removed from the class. Extenuating circumstances will be dealt with by the administration.
The student must be inside the classroom at the beginning of class. If not, the student will be marked tardy. If he/she is tardy to class, an excuse is required. If not excused, on the first offense the student must outline the chapter we are studying that day, have it signed by a parent, and return to the instructor. Additional offenses will be handled on an individual basis and could result in removal from the course.
FEES: The cost of the class is $225 for students enrolled at Superior School District and $325 for students NOT enrolled at Superior. This must be paid in full ON OR BEFORE the date of the parent meeting. Checks will be made out to: the Superior School District. If a student attends one class, he or she will be responsible for the full payment regardless of completion or passage of the course. Again, extenuating circumstances will be dealt with through the administration.
CLASSROOM PAPERWORK: All assignments turned in to be corrected must be identified with the student’s NAME AND DATE. This helps speed up the process of grading/correcting. If the owner of the paper cannot be identified, then the paper will not be corrected and will be set aside until the student identifies the work.
After being corrected, the student will find one of the following marks on his/her work:
PASS- 82% or above
INC-Below 82% or FAILING grade and must be corrected and returned. All assignments must be passed before a student will receive a passing grade in the classroom and receive their permit.
On all incomplete work (INC) or (F) grades, the student is only required to answer the questions he/she missed. They must rewrite the questions and the correct answer, and then staple the corrections to the front of the original work. If correct, the paper will be marked PASS. Students will also have to pass the final classroom exam with 82% or above. The requirement to pass the written knowledge test is 82%.
DRIVING: Driving schedules will be handed out at the parent meeting. It is the responsibility of the student to be at the drive. Students are responsible to make arrangements with other groups if a drive conflicts with their schedule. Each student is required to have 6 hours of driving and 12 hours of observation in the car. STUDENTS MAY NOT MISS ANY DRIVES, AND ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR SWAPPING WITH ANOTHER STUDENT IF THERE IS A SCHEDULING CONFLICT.
