Sports EditorIn this momentous 50th season of the Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA) Games, the SSC Volleyball team bagged a bronze medal after winning against St. Stephen’s High School and St. Jude Catholic School during the eliminations last September 28 and October 12 respectively at the SSC Gym.
In the quarter finals, the team beat St. Paul College Pasig last November 9 and won the bronze match when they went up against San Beda College Alabang last December 1.
The SSC Basketball team, on the other hand, has won against Assumption College last October 26 and Saint Jude Catholic School last November 9 at DLSZ during the eliminations.
The SSC volleyball and basketball teams attended the WNCAA opening ceremony with the theme “WNCAA@50: Destined for Greatness” at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay City last September 21.
Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno, Mayor of Manila, was in attendance to show his regard for the participating Metro Manila schools.
The SSC Pep Squad performed in the opening program together with the other cheer teams from Assumption Antipolo, Assumption College San Lorenzo Centro Escolar University, Chiang Kai Shek College, De La Salle-Santiago Zobel School, La Salle College Antipolo, Miriam College, Philippine Women's University, San Beda College Alabang, St. Paul College Pasig, Saint Jude Catholic School, St. Stephen's High School, University of Asia and the Pacific and University of Makati to show a collaborative effort between all of them.
Different WNCAA games have been ongoing since October and both the volleyball and basketball teams have been training hard for their respective competitions.
“Despite all the exams and performance tasks given, I chose to continue pursuing volleyball because it is my passion. If you really love what you are doing, playing volleyball in my case, it would not matter how hard you have to train because you enjoy it,” said Liezette Valencerina, member of the Scions volleyball team
“The sport even encourages me to do my best in my academics and it helped me become a better student as well,” she added. “It may be tiring since we train twice a week and also do self-training for conditioning but all it takes hard work and time-management and I am very eager to see how this season will turn out.”
According to Mr. Jan Cary Lacap, moderator of the volleyball team, “I saw how they worked hard to achieve their goal — the late night trainings, the dives they made to save each ball and all the other sacrifices they went through to achieve the podium finish. I can proudly say that it’s all worth it. They played their hearts out and more than anything else, it was their perseverance to give pride to our school that made them win the bronze medal in the recently concluded WNCAA 2019.”
Ms. Charmaine Diwa, moderator of the basketball club, said, “Like any other teams, we had difficulties in the preparation for the WNCAA but we are beyond grateful for the success we achieved. This is indeed a great year for the team. Thank you to our coaches for the training and of course the players for doing their best. We had the least number of players, short time for preparation, we have a lot of things to improve, we acknowledge our flaws still we will not stop until we reach the top.”
“So far, this WNCAA season has been really good for the school and I am really excited to see the remaining athletes compete in next year’s events,” according to Karleen Miranda, a member of the Scions Volleyball team.
This January, the swimming, badminton, taekwondo and table tennis Scion teams will be competing to further bring pride to their alma mater.
