No matter what your interests are, there’s likely something at the Blue Flame that appeals to you: We report everything from local politics to varsity sports, from student plays to science news. You can write columns for our opinion page or prepare the literary magazine, our annual arts supplement. Thanks to our online set-up, we can now accommodate more long-form nonfiction that warrant greater depth and analysis.
The Blue Flame is currently in need of a design team that lays out the quarterly paper. As we enter the new normal, we are changing the way we read online. Other positions in high demand include photographers, videographers, and illustrators. A dedicated copy-editing staff is also important because they are responsible for proofreading every article before it goes to press.

You do not need to have experience as a student journalist to join the organization. We offer a range of resources and exercises, but the commitment to learn must come from you.
For aspiring reporters, the portfolio must include: 1 news article and 1 feature article on any topic. You may use the articles published on this website as a guide to see how these stories are written.
For aspiring illustrators, the portfolio must include: 2 editorial cartoons about any relevant issue. You may contact (Shibby?) if you have any questions on how to create an effective editorial cartoon.
For aspiring photographers, the portfolio must include: 1 photo essay on any topic. They will also have to write a caption on three photos which will be sent via email.
For aspiring layout artists, no portfolio is needed, but they must know how to use Adobe InDesign or other similar programs.
If any article, artwork, or photo is found to have been stolen, the student responsible will be issued a warning and his or her application will automatically be rejected.
You can join the Blue Flame during any point of the year and contribute as much or as little as you’d like.
