Health Education Course Overview
This is an introduction to Health Sciences course. A Freshmen level course that fulfills the SRVUS District and California State requirement for all students to have one semester of general Health Education for; health-risk reduction and reproductive healthcare resource awareness. This course, in our District also provides students occupational healthcare awareness, with summer hands-on opportunities through summer institute resource high school affiliates.

What is Health Literacy?
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, two types of Health Literacy can be defined as follows;
Personal health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the ability to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others.
Organizational health literacy is the degree to which organizations equitably enable individuals to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others.

Teacher Tip: When doing BMI or Caloric Consumption calculation identity the inaccuracies/ discrepancies/ assumptions with some of the data. Give students the choice to use any information they choose, not force them to choose. Provide the option to make objective rather than subjective, calculations and observations.

2018 and 2021 Positive Prevention Plus (P3) or, (PP+) Curriculum Binders provided to SRVUSD Health Teachers in November 2023 Training.

Consent Education (CE)- Nidhi and Deepa DV High, Seniors ℅ 2022- excited to present again, in SY2022- 2023 at both DVHS and MVHS, they are looking to expand their CE research to all SRVUSD High School Health Sections. An FLE College Prep Budgeting P.B.L. Task - linked here, modified from the initial Teen Parenting Project. The statistics listed are collaborative with recent Healthy People 2030 Stats plus the stats which, Julie Arotzerena discovered for our students when we switched from the "Teen Parenting" title to Budgeting Project inclusive of all students. College-life and universal protection student health sensitive services and resources is the added component to the Family Life Education (FLE) College Budgeting project. First Aid Unit is the alternative to FLE.

Project Based-Learning (PBL):
Building a community designed to alleviate health concerns.
Example: (Teacher assigns the type of community. Students offered to complete one of 3 choices).
1. Create a neighborhood with parks, not every community has a park that promotes fitness.
Further development: some parks have transient individuals living in tents or in their cars on the side of the road. Design a proposal to the County or the City (option, letter to the Governor of California to have funding for homeless to have “Motel Vouchers during the winter cold months.”
2. Create a neighborhood solution to food disparity (eliminate food deserts); Propose/ Petition the City for twice per month- The Second Harvest Food Bank Trucks, or Petition City for a neighborhood grocery store or, other student suggested solutions.
3. Design a high school or plans that demonstrate conceptual understanding of the importance of implementing laws to remove Smoke Shops from within 1000 feet of Grade schools, K-14.

Are earned through Points and or Standards Based Grading System. Scores are stored on Schoology and presented to families via Infinite Campus Portal at the end of each Quarter and at the end of each Semester.
