There will be plenty of reading and writing throughout both semesters. But just like many of the college courses you will take in coming years, many assignments will not be graded. The majority of assignments must be performed simply in order to be an active participant in the class discussions or in order to perform the graded assignments. The five weighted categories are as follow: Papers & Projects, 25%; Quizzes & Exams, 25%; Homework/Classwork, 5%; Summer Assignments, 5%; Vocabulary, 5%; Outside Reading, 5%; and Listening and Speaking, 10%—the remaining 20% is your final exam. Course grades, calculated as a total of the weighted categories added together, are determined as follows:
Listening and Speaking is based partly on class presentations, but also on the following: being in attendance (regularly); being on time and prepared; actively listening to others and throwing in your 2¢ when you raise your hand or when I call on you; and, in general, being an aid to the flow of the class. It is important to know that participation during discussions is a requisite feature of an “A” student—because “A” students not only demonstrate superior reading and writing skills, but they also aid the flow of class and enrich the experience of all, including that of the teacher. Therefore, based on the specific guidelines for participation set forth in the Monte Vista High School Student Handbook, attendance and active contributions to the class are a must for anyone shooting for an “A.”
Note 1: The Summer Assignments category will not be utilized in Spring Semester, silently adding approximately 1% into each of the other five weighted categories (not counting the Final Exam, which will remain at 20%).
Note 2: Students who have completed all the assignments in the grade book and are within 0.5% of the next grade level will be raised to the next grade. If these two standards are not met, do not ask for a grade bump.
