Profile: A Lifelong Dedication to Computer Science Education
With over 25 years of unwavering commitment to the field of Computer Science education, I have had the privilege of shaping the minds of countless students while fostering innovation within the education community. My journey began at Notre Dame High School, and throughout my entire career, I have remained devoted to Catholic Education, cherishing the values and principles it instills.
A Proud Member of the SRS Community:
As a testament to my dedication, both of my granddaughters attend Saint Raphael School, and I take immense pride in being an active member of the SRS community. This connection to the school fuels my passion for education and inspires me to contribute my expertise wherever possible.
Instructional Innovator:
Beyond the classroom, I have assumed the role of an Instructional Innovator, providing guidance and inspiration to fellow educators in Computer Science and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). This involves sharing best practices, exploring innovative teaching methods, and ensuring that educators have the resources they need to excel in their roles.
Founder of STREAM Camp and Academy:
I am also the founder of a summer STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, and Math) Camp and an after-school STREAM Academy. These initiatives aim to nurture curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving skills in young minds, bridging the gap between theory and real-world application.
Curriculum Development and Leadership:
In the spirit of service to the education community, I played a crucial role in authoring the 2012 Diocese of Trenton Technology Curriculum. This curriculum serves as a roadmap for educators to effectively integrate technology into their teaching methods.
Additionally, my involvement with the Computer Science Teachers Association of New Jersey (CSTANJ) has been instrumental. Since 2017, I have maintained the chapter's website and served on the leadership committee, co-chairing the K-8 subcommittee. To support new computer science educators, I took on the role of Registration Manager for the 2022 Summer CSPDWeek and contributed to the Steering Committee's efforts.
National and Statewide Influence:
My dedication to the field extends beyond state borders. This year, I was honored to be invited to serve on the CSTA National Committee for Reflective Teachers. In this capacity, I look forward to assisting teachers in applying the CSTA Teacher Standards to their teaching, ultimately enhancing the quality of computer science education nationwide.
Furthermore, I have been invited to join the NJ Wind Advisory Council, where I will contribute to the review and refinement of the New Jersey wind energy curriculum. This role underscores my commitment to fostering interdisciplinary education and preparing students for the evolving landscape of technology and sustainability.
In my relentless pursuit of excellence in Computer Science education, I find fulfillment in guiding students, supporting educators, and shaping curriculum to prepare the leaders, innovators, and problem solvers of tomorrow. My journey continues to be a testament to the transformative power of education and its potential to change lives and shape the future.

Titled "Inclusive Computer Science in 3D with Tinkercad Codeblocks & Circuits," this hands-on session will explore how Tinkercad Codeblocks and Circuits can be used to create engaging, accessible, and inclusive computer science experiences for all learners.

In 2021, Saint Raphael School embarked on an exciting journey by introducing the SPRINT classroom and the STREAM/Computer Science & Design Thinking program. SPRINT, an acronym for "STREAM through Persistence, Resilience, Innovation, and New Technologies," embodies our commitment to fostering well-rounded, innovative thinkers who can navigate the complexities of the modern world.
Our Vision:
At the heart of our vision is the SPRINT Lab, a dynamic space where students explore not only the principles of Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, and Math but also the attributes of successful individuals. Here, character traits like persistence, resilience, and empathy are cultivated through hands-on experiences that extend beyond the confines of traditional classrooms.
Adhering to High Standards:
Our curriculum is carefully crafted in alignment with the New Jersey Standards released in 2020, the Diocese of Trenton Curriculum Guidelines, and The Cardinal Newman Standards. We aim to provide students with a rigorous yet engaging educational experience that prepares them for the challenges of the digital age.
A Journey Through Technology:
For students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade, Mrs. Smith leads classes once a week, covering the fundamentals of Application of Technology, Introduction to Computer Science, Networks and Systems, the Engineering Design Process, Maker Tools, and New Technologies. This immersive experience includes hands-on activities like working with Edison Robots, Sphero Bolt Robots, Makey Makey, Snap Circuits, and Cubletes, and exploring the world of 3D design with Makers Empire 3D Designer, Code.Org, Scratch, and Scratch Jr.
Elevating the Curriculum for Grades 4-8:
To ensure a comprehensive understanding of technology, students in grades 4 to 8 meet twice a week. This additional time allows for a more in-depth exploration of higher-level programming, 3D design and printing, robotics, Designing for Humans, and collaborative projects with subject teachers, providing practical experience with the Engineering Design Process.
Our Tools for Excellence:
We utilize a range of cutting-edge resources, including Carnegie Mellon University's CS program, BootStrap World for Data Science, and various coding languages such as Javascript, Python, HTML5, and Pyret. Our students engage in block coding and text coding, while also mastering 3D design with Makers Empire and Autodesk's Tinkercad, culminating in the opportunity to bring their creations to life through our two state-of-the-art 3D printers.

A Windy Adventure: Empowering Saint Raphael School's Future
I'm excited to share with you some incredible news about recent developments that will have a positive impact on our students' education.
I was honored to be asked to sit on the NJ Dept of Ed Wind Advisory Council, a remarkable opportunity that allows me to contribute to the advancement of wind education in our state. This experience has enriched my understanding of renewable energy and its significance in our lives, and I can't wait to bring this knowledge back to our school.
But that's not all! I had the privilege of attending the KidWind 2023 RECharge Academy at Stockton University in Atlantic City this summer. It was an enriching experience that provided me with the latest insights and resources in the field of wind energy education. The knowledge and inspiration gained from this academy will undoubtedly benefit our students.
To top it off, Saint Raphael School has received a generous grant of $800, which will be used to enhance our wind education initiatives. This funding will allow us to procure essential supplies, materials, and resources to enrich the learning experiences of our students.
