About our Program

Since 1979 the Child Development Learning Lab has been an integral part of the Family & Consumer Sciences curriculum at Southern Regional High School.  This program gives high school students a unique hands-on experience of working with preschool age children as they study their physical, cognitive and social-emotional growth.  Under the direction of a certified teacher, high school students plan and implement lessons to engage preschoolers in developmentally appropriate activities.

Philosophy

Each child is a unique person with his or her own strengths and weaknesses. Our aim is to meet the children's individual needs in a clean, safe, nurturing environment.  The classroom activities are designed to help each child grow physically, intellectually, socially, and emotionally at his or her own pace.

The Classroom Experience

Children will experience a variety of developmentally appropriate activities during the day. Among these are activities that promote fine and gross motor skills, art, music, dramatic play, and block play. Academic areas include math, science, language arts, and social studies.

Because preschoolers feel more secure when they know what they will do during the day, we follow a daily schedule.  Activities are planned to compliment the unit that the children are learning about and to achieve a balance between active and quiet play.

Enrollment

The classes are open to all residents of the Southern Regional district as well as the sending districts. (Please note we are unable to accept residents of Barnegat as they are not part of our sending district.)

Children must be three years old by October 1 of the current school year and not yet enrolled in kindergarten.  Children must also be toilet trained.

There will be a non-refundable $150 registration fee which will be used for classroom supplies and scholarships for our students pursuing a career related to Family and Consumer Sciences.  This fee will be collected at orientation in August.

Interested parents may enroll their children by completing the  online form.

To avoid having your child on a waiting list, please register early.
