Design Challenge

April 9, 2012 by cainesarcade

9-year-old Caine Monroy spent his summer vacation building an elaborate cardboard arcade inside his dad’s used auto parts store. The entire summer went by, and he never had a single customer. But Caine didn’t give up. Then, on the last day of summer, filmmaker Nirvan Mullick walked in by chance to buy an auto part for his car. Caine asked Nirvan to play, and, well, watch Caine’s Arcade to see what happened next…

School Wide Design Challenge

During the month of April, Hidden Valley students participate in a school wide "Design Challenge". Inspired by the short film, Caine's Arcade, students will use cardboard and everyday objects to create their own creations. Students will design, build and exhibit their inventions. Throughout the process, students will utilize 21st century skills of collaboration, creativity and communication. This process involves engineering, math and problem solving skills as students imagine and then through trial and error, build their ideas. Students will write and reflect on their inventions as well as present to the class. This is a TK-6 Design Challenge and will look different at each grade level, as teachers align the project with grade level standards and STEAM objectives.
