The Indian Women and Mathematics (IWM) is a collective of mathematicians that has been in existence formally since 2013. It began as a project supported by the National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India and continues to be sponsored by NBHM. Our main aim is to encourage more women to pursue higher education and careers in mathematics. To this end, we organise regular academic events and networking opportunities in all parts of India, and we collaborate with like-minded organisations and people across the world.

A BRIEF HISTORY
In 2010, India hosted the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Hyderabad. A major new event was planned to precede the ICM: the first International Conference of Women Mathematicians (ICWM). As preparation for the ICWM, and to increase awareness regarding concerns of women in mathematics in India, an international conference "Advances in Mathematics: Focus on Women in Mathematics" was hosted by Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, during October 2009. AiM and ICWM provided the impetus for the first "Indian Women and Mathematics" conference at Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, in 2012. This led to the project-grant from the National Board for Higher Mathematics to provide an umbrella for activities related to training and outreach for women mathematicians.
