Close Reading : Ben Crystal style

Steps for Completion:

1. Read the passage (aloud preferably and/or listen). Then read any notes, and then read it again. 

2. Give the context for the passage. (Where in the plot is it happening?)

3. Use the Ben Crystal method to 

a. mark the end of thoughts/sentences

b. note the number of lines and thoughts

c. note any lines that seem to break from iambic pentameter--pauses, overflowing lines

d. note the emotional state of the speaker (and note any O's)

4. Paraphrase/summarize the passage in a paragraph or so.

5. Explain any important images, figures, figurative or poetic language in the passage.

6. Explain to what extent the passage is microcosmic of the play’s theme, plot, character(s), mood, or tone. (including GQs)
