Since our establishment in the academic year 2018/19, it is a response to the ever-changing education environment. The project is part of the School-Based Initiative of 2018 'i – Journey' Paid Non-local Study Leave Scheme for Secondary School Teachers (A1 - Finland) & project funded by Dedicated Funding Programme for Publicly-funded Schools under Quality Education Fund in 2019/20. The techniques of raising Chinese Mitten Crabs in an aquaponics system comes from collaboration through the Professional Development Schools Scheme and support from our sister school Nord Anglia Chinese International School Shanghai through the Sister School Scheme. In 2020/21, the programme is also supported by the CUHK STEAM@Soybean project, and the social enterprise, Green Skies.
With reference to Finland's latest education reform, the project aims at developing a learning community by integrating aquaponics with Chinese Mitten Crabs to improve interdisciplinary learning and promote STEAM interest within the curriculum. It further helps to introduce flipped classroom learning into our school-based curriculum and to cater for learning diversity. Entrepreneurship education is also promoted for students to achieve transversal competencies.
The project aims to be the first school in Hong Kong to raise Chinese Mitten Crabs in an educational environment. The ongoing project aims to raise awareness for indoor farming, urban agriculture, and sustainability. Through construction and maintenance of the Chinese Mitten Crabs Aquaponics Room, it develops students’ problem-solving skills and design thinking, along with entrepreneurial spirit and dare.
