The State of Maine requires minors under 16 years of age to obtain a work permit before beginning a job. Students must get a new permit every time they start a new job until they turn 16, even if they work for their parents.
To apply for a work permit, the minor must be:
Enrolled in school
Not habitually truant or under suspension, and
Passing a majority of their courses during the current grading period.
Steps to obtain a work permit:
Have a job offer.
Complete the required form stating that you are a current student who attends regularly and is in good academic standing.
Complete the State of Maine Work Permit Application and return to the SPHS School Counseling Office.
