As a follow up to this course, teachers will be expected to create a website as a portal to their classroom(s). While Google Classroom serves as a workflow solution between teachers and students, your teacher website will be the primary location for sharing class essentials with families and students. Think of the website as your "open house" where you will post important information that you might typically share at the beginning of the school year, such as grading policies, course syllabi, course calendar, etc. and have available throughout the year. The proactive communication will save you time later, as you will not have to respond to individual emails about class details.
Many of us have been using our own websites as part of our teaching for years. If yours meets the best practice recommendations in the Communications and Navigation design principles, there is no need to create a new site. Of course, all are encouraged to make a copy of the template aligned to your school to maintain a consistent appearance with colleagues, and provide the most consistent experience for you students.
The goal of your website should be to provide essential information for students and families with clarity and simplicity.
What should be on your website
A simple landing or homepage containing your contact information and clear information about where assignments are posted.
A clear navigation system helping users find additional resources needed by individual classes.
A page with essential information about each class including a description of the class, expectations, grading policy, an updated calendar, and links to the location of all assignments and needed resources.
Optional pages may include examples of student work and other elements designed to build community.
Avoid any pages or elements that make locating essential information difficult.
Your website's purpose is not to entertain, but rather to connect students and families to your teaching.
While you can convey your personality through your website, personal interest elements need to be located at the "back" of the site if they are included at all.
No content that in any way violates district policy is to be included in any form.
