SewPo Studio is a classroom-based program housed within our school's Makerspace, where students learn to use sewing machines, sergers, and digital embroidery machines to mend, alter, and transform discarded clothing and textiles. The program operates within our existing elective course structure and is being developed in partnership with students who are actively shaping the curriculum and workflow.
The program launched the Spring of 2026 with a pilot with two dedicated students and will expand in the following year to accommodate full class rotations and eventually a model open to the broader school community.
Our objectives are to teach students practical garment repair and construction skills, build environmental literacy around textile waste, develop student digital portfolios documenting their work, and create a replicable model that other educators can adapt. Intended outcomes include measurable increases in student participation, a library of student-created upcycled pieces, animated PSA content about textile waste produced by our Animation and Game Design students, and a published curriculum framework available to other schools.
