7th Grade Science

About this class:

7th grade science is initially centered around the topic of life science. We start this exploration by looking at what it means for something to be alive as well as some lab safety and microscope work. After determining what is alive, we look at the smallest unit of life: cells. Cells are the building blocks for our bodies so we then look to the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems and how they interact to keep a human alive. After a dive into the human body, we look at genetics and the passing of traits from parents to offspring. Finally, we wend the year focusing on plate tectonics and how Earth has changed throughout the ages. The exploration of the content matter will be done in a multitude of ways including labs, notes, interactive websites, readings, videos, as well as graphics. Class expectations:

Students will need the following materials every day for science class:

  • A charged iPad

  • Pencil or writing utensil

  • Planner or iPad for recording work/upcoming events

  • Folder or binder to hold papers

Homework will be occasionally assigned and should not take the students longer than 15-20 minutes. If you or your student needs assistance with any of the aforementioned expectations, homework, or any other aspect of the class please reach out to Ms. Clark at clarkka@spsdme.org.

Lab Expectations:

Much of 7th grade is focused on forming a hypothesis, performing experiments, and gathering and analyzing data. This will be done in a laboratory format where much of the first few weeks is focused on lab safety. Students and parents will have to returned a signed lab contract stating they know the expectations and plan to follow them. The expectations are outlined in the laboratory contract on the right. A paper copy will be sent home with your student at the beginning of the school year.
