About this class

Welcome to Science for Team 7 Gold 2022-2023

In SCIENCE class this year students will explore the human body and all of the levels of structural organization. We will begin by learning about atoms, molecules, and cell organelles. Then we will learn how the digestive, respiratory, circulatory, systems work together to keep us alive. Next we will explore how the environment and genetic factors determine the growth of an individual organism. The best way to contact me is by email: montgoli@spsdme.org.

I am looking forward to having a fun and exciting year of learning about science!

Please email me if you have any questions or concerns: montgoli@spsdme.org

Class Information & Requirements:

  • Required materials:

  • Science Folder or 3-Ring Binder with paper

  • Earbuds

  • Pen or Pencil

  • Grading: Memorial uses Proficiency-Based Grading to report student performance on learning targets. Our science curriculum has drawn from state standards and national best practices to provide Essential Learning Targets (ELT’s) for our students. To collect information and evaluate whether your student is proficient for a specific ELT we will be using the JumpRope grading program.

Click here for link to JumpRope

  • Essential Learning Targets (ELTs): Student scores are based on essential learning targets (ELTs) that they should meet by the completion of 7th grade. Students will be required to show that they are proficient for each ELT by completing Summative Assessments (worth 75% of grade). Throughout the year they will also be required to complete Key Formative Assessments and Formative Assessments (worth 25% of grade) which are used as check-ins to guide instruction and indicate if extra support is needed to demonstrate proficiency for an ELT. Students will be reflecting upon their own progress towards proficiency throughout the school year as well.

  • ELTs are scored:

  • 4 (Exemplary work that shows a deeper, more thorough understanding of the ELT)

  • 3 (Meets the proficiency of the ELT)

  • 2.5 (Partially meets the proficiency of the ELT; approaching the level of understanding required for proficiency)

  • 2 (Partially meets the proficiency of the ELT; early exhibition of a developing understanding)

  • 1 (Does not meet the proficiency of the ELT; learning is not progressing at a rate to meet end-of-year target)

  • Habits of Work (HOW): Students will be graded weekly on their work habits and be asked to reflect upon them throughout the school year. These scores are not calculated into the student’s course grade but will be used to determine eligibility for after school programs and student recognition awards and will also be entered into Jumprope. In addition, developing solid Habits of Work skills will help students achieve their goals in life! The three Habits of Work categories are:

Preparation for Learning:

-Student regularly completes assignments.

-Student is prepared for class with all the necessary materials.

Engagement with Learning:

-Student is focused in class and tends to use time effectively, takes initiative, asks questions, and actively contributes to the class.

Interactions with Peers and Teachers:

-Student’s language and behavior are respectful of others.

-Student regularly interacts in a way that contributes to a positive and productive learning environment for all

  • Habits of Work are scored:

  • 3 (Meets the proficiency of the HOW category)

  • 2 (Partially meets the proficiency of the HOW category)

  • 1 (Does not meet the proficiency of the HOW category)

  • Homework: Students will be given light homework in science class. Students are required and expected to prepare for upcoming assessments (quizzes & tests) by either staying after school for help or setting aside time at home in order to review new vocabulary.

  • Missing or Incomplete Homework: To earn a score of "3" in Habits of Work-Preparation, a student must complete and turn the assignment in by the due date. Incomplete assignments earn a score of "2" in Habits of Work-Preparation. Missing or late work will not be graded unless there is an absence and will be recorded as a score of "1" in Habits of Work-Preparation. Please note: If a student marks an assignment as "Complete" or "Done" in Google Classroom without actually doing the assignment, it will still be marked as a "1" in JumpRope, but will "appear" done in Google Classroom.

  • Absences: If a student is absent from school it is their responsibility to obtain and complete all assignments that they have missed while out. Students have 2 days for every 1 day out to complete their missing assignments. Missing assignments from absences will appear as an "X" in JumpRope (an "X" has a score of 1). Students can obtain missed assignments by going to Google Classroom. I have created a Google Slideshow for every lesson plan that I teach, which are very helpful to look at in order to stay caught up with the class. I will be happy to help students/parents find missing work if needed.

  • Support: Student support time will be determined soon and posted on my website. I have created Google Slideshows for every lesson I teach. These are very helpful to preview the night before or watch over again while at home.

  • Behavior Plan: “Everyone deserves to be treated with Kindness and Respect” Please refer to the student handbook for details about our discipline policy.

  • Planners/Organization/Checking Grades/Homework: Students will receive Daily Planners this year and are required to record all of their assignments and upcoming assessments (quizzes and tests) into them on a daily basis for EVERY class. Students should also keep their paper notebook and iPad neat and organized. Students are required to bring their iPads to school FULLY CHARGED each day. Students will be responsible for the chargers that they were given in 6th grade and must turn in the charger at the end of the eighth grade. Students and families can access assignments, daily lesson plans, vocabulary words, handouts, and useful web links by going to Google Classroom-Class Code: axt3fhl. It is especially important for students that miss school to check Google Classroom for missed assignments. All students will be given a gmail account to communicate with me. Students and families should also regularly check JumpRope which will give you access to Science ELT and Habits of Work scores.
