What better of a way to learn about money than through lemonade! We learned about the value of money, how to make an amount with coins, how to make change, and then we "bought" some delicious lemonade!
We Are Authors!
Alpert taught us about story settings, character, problems and solutions. We then wrote our own version of Alpert stories!
Making Indigenous bracelets
At Wilderness School we made land art, learned about birds and nests, did a nature scavenger hunt, and played in the mud kitchen.
We learned all about directions, coding, and then got to code mice through a maze!
Learning about living things in 3D (animals and critters in our ecosystem), CuriousCITY, Dinosaurs, and all of the fun exhibits at the Telus Word Of Science. Ask your child what they learned at the science centre?
What a beautiful performance of Kiss The Sky yesterday! Here are some fun photos of us between performances!
After exploring the differences between urban and rural communities, students were challenged with the following task: create something that represents either an urban or a rural environment. Their work needed to highlight two or three specific features that clearly define the chosen setting. The goal was to assess their understanding of the distinguishing characteristics between urban and rural areas, as well as their ability to thoughtfully design and explain those elements.
We had fun creating our fuzed glass magnets - we can't wait to see them when they're finished!
We love to read these books - come see our bulletin board to see why!
When we have a few extra minutes at the end of the day we have been learning cooperative math games like Monopoly and Uno. So much fun!
We had some fun using toothpicks and marshmallows to build 3D shapes. They weren't the sturdiest, but we still got to explore and look at the properties of a few 3D shapes!
We had some fun dressing up as 100 year olds! We also enjoyed making groups of ten to create a snack of 100 things, beading 100 Cheerios, and writing about what we'd do with $100 (if only that money would go as far as it does in the mind of a 6-8 year old!).
We enjoyed the little ladybugs and friends program. Ask your child what they learned about ladybugs A highlight was the feature pyramid of Mars, planting our own Coleus, and exploring the other pyramids!
We had some time to learn and practice playing UNO in small groups. So much fun!
Grade twos were building landforms. Ask them about the landform they built and what features made that landform look like the real thing. Grade ones were measuring using a few types of non standard units.
Scientific Methods
What do scientist do - they ask questions? We followed scientific methods to find out how to melt an ice cube faster. They thought the sun, salt, or sugar. Ask your child what they learned!
Winter Performance
In case you missed it, here is our winter performance. They did amazing!
Thank you for sending in treats and icing to make this cross-grade activity possible!
We took these sayings and put our own spin on them. I think I like these ones better!
Students got to build a tractor then explore how forces, like pushes and pulls, can be used to move objects. They then got to be creative and create their own vehicle!
What do scientist do? They ask questions? Iggy Peck the Architect asks questions and builds a bridge. Students were given supplies and a group, and their criteria was to create a bridge. To do that they had to communicate and problem solve. Take a look at their bridges!
We looked at and created our own mocassins for Rock Your Mocs day.
The magic and wonder as we watch the first snowfall!
We've been learning about what it means to be a scientist. Good scientsts are curious and they ask questions. Ask your child what questions they asked, and what they learned from our pepper, water, and dish soap experiment.
Halloween Fun!
We had some fun at the Halloween parade. We also did some math by participating in a Halloween treat survey, and graphing Skittles!
Raking Leaves With our Buddies
Thanks for the bags and rakes. We had fun helping out our school yard by raking up some leaves!
Alpert believes he's in a snowstorm until he discovers about a setting. Students in 1/2S have been learning about settings in stories and we created our own Alpert story where we created our own setting for Alpert. Ask your child about their Alpert's setting!
We went for a walk to observe the changes we might see outside this time of year. Students were asked: what do you notice in the fall?
the leaves changing
the grass turning yellow
the leaves are falling
it's cooler
the leaves sounds crunchy
What a fun Kino tradition of the Turkey Trot on the day before Thanksgiving!
Wilderness Centre
Mud Kitchen
Oh what can't you make with mud! We had pie, cupcakes, cake with berry toppings, batter and dough, cookies, salad, sour cream, and so much more.
Pop-up Playground
Using our imaginations to create things out of this unique assortment of supplies. There was McDonalds, a jump course, a pool, a couple houses, a rocket ship, a table, some yards, and so much more!
Nest Making
Learning about birds nests, bird eggs, and making our own bird nests out of grass and sticks.
Bannock Making
A bus adventure had us a bit late, so instead of making the bannock we learned about it and got to sample bannock. With saskatoon jam!
The whole school participated in an assembly centred around Terry Fox and the amazing legacy that he left. We then participated in the Terry Fox run as a school.
Ask your child about LA Centres or Math Centres.
Meet the students of 1/2S!
Take a look at this section to find photos and descriptions of what we're doing in class. This can be a fun way to spark conversations around "what did you do at school today".
