Look at what we're learning ...

Fractions

We were learning all about halves this week. We folded paper in half to show how we can make two equal parts, divided a glass of water in half, and we split a graham wafer in half before we got to enjoy them. Fractions are fun!

A cute visitor!

We had some cute duckling visitors (named McDavid and Marshmallow) from a classmate this week. The ducklings were adored by the grade one students. Thanks for visiting us!

Code Ninjas!

We had some fun learning how to code a maze on Scratch JR during our Code Ninjas field trip. Ask your child to tell you about what they learned!

A math puzzle!

We had fun connecting all these puzzle pieces backwards (in order from 1-100), then flipping it over and looking at the completed picture!

Plants & Animals in Spring

We've been comparing plants and animals in the spring. Ask me how plants and animals change in the spring.

Walking on Sunshine

We had so much fun practicing and performing "Walking on Sunshine" during our Spring Collective. We hoped you enjoyed watching it as much as we enjoyed performing for you!

Glass Making Field Trip

We enjoyed creating bugs during our in school glass making field trip. We can't wait to see the finished product!

Is in an object?

We've been learning about the properties of objects in Science. We went on a classroom exploration looking for objects and describing those objects: size, shape, material, colour, feeling, etc. You might have fun exploring your home for objects as well!

Urban and Rural

We've been learning about communities in Social Studies. We've been learning about urban and rural communities. We had some fun reveiewing this concept with a class Kahoot! Students also built their own urban or rural community and had to explain what made it urban or rural. As your child to tell you about their creation.

100 Days of Grade one!

It's hard to believe we've had 100 days of grade one! We celebrated by dressing as 100 years old, regrouping our base ten blocks into a group of 100, hunting for 100 pop rocks and compiling into our own 100s chart, and making 10 groups of 10 so we could snack on 100 things. We had so much fun!

Silver Carnival and valentine's Fun!

Thanks to our grade five buddies for helping us pass out valentines. We also had a fun afternoon participating on carnival style games with coins as a fundraiser for the St. Albert Food Bank. The school raised $1145.55!

Monkey Business!

Teacher's Pet came for an in school field trip based around a monkey who escaped! Students moved through the zoo measuring the length, area and weight of different objects, trying to spot items that could be added to their monkey’s enclosure, so he doesn’t try to escape again. Critical thinking skills were put to the test as they investigated and manipulated the properties of many different objects while creating their own monkey enclosure to keep.

Muttart Field Trip

We had lots of fun learning about ladybugs, the parts of a plant, releasing ladybugs, and planting peppermint.  The feature pyramid, Giants in the Mist, was a favourite amongst many. The excitement as we walked in and saw the mist was amazing!

Kimochis

We have learned about Cloud and Lovey Dove.

Cloud's story: "At times, I can be unpredictable. Some days, I’m happy and other days, I am either mad or sad.  Basically, I’m moody. BUT I’m working on controlling my emotions"

Here is the passage about Lovey Dove: " I like to send FRIENDLY signals and to act and speak in KIND ways because I want everyone to get along.  It makes me anxious when they don’t. I’m also loving and sweet and very proud of my friends and my beautiful adopted baby, Turtle Dove".

When the first two weeks after Christmas break are indoor recess, you get creative! They decided to create their own "flower shop".

We enjoyed PJs and pancakes this morning. Happy holidays!

Happy holidays!

Can you catch the Gingerbread man?

We've done a few activities with gingerbread this season. We have been practicing retelling stories in the correct sequence of events (using The Gingerbread Man story). Students created puppets to retell their stories. If you still have them at home, they might be able to put on a puppet show for you! Then we buddied up with our grade five buddies to decorate real gingerbread cookies.

Holiday literacy Package!

For the last couple weeks we have unwrapped a holiday themed book during our calendar routine. It has been a fun and festive daily mystery!

Segmenting sounds

We practice segmenting and blending sounds daily during phonics. On this day, we created life sized Elkonin boxes to segment sound with our whole bodies. Students were then able to tell me what sound or combination of sounds they represented.

Centre Time

A little peak into what our daily centres look like. I don't always have a chance to snap photos! On this day we are developing our number sense to 30 by representing numbers, recognizing them, counting them, and using manipulatives. There is also a tech centre, and a game centre with a pre-addition game (one more and one less Go Fish).

Frosty the snowman!

1S performed Frosty the Snowman with actions for the school in the first of our holiday assemblies. Then we participated in some singing with the school. The grade ones did great!

Building words

Representing numbers

Sound Bingo

When you're missing a bunch of classmates, it's fun to practice some skills with some fun bonus centres!

A scientific investigation

Scientists ask good questions. One of our grade one inquirers asked, "I wonder what happens when you freeze a flower?" Another student asked, "I wonder what happens when you freeze a flower in jar?" We followed a scientific method process to see what happens when you freeze a flower. Ask your child what we learned!

Can you bounce the syllables?

We've been working over the last few weeks on counting the number of syllables in each word. In this activity, we had fun using a ball to bounce the syllables in a word!

An Author Visit

Richard Bird came to the school to read his book - Goobletygok!

We Remember

Halloween fun!

We had some fun parading around in our costumes, graphing Smarties, and using dice in a fun "roll a story" activity where we verbally shared stories with small groups.

Pumpkin carving fun!

We had fun joining up with our grade five buddies to carve pumpkins!

Collaborative Art Project

We did a school-wide, collaborative art project by having the students paint rocks orange, and the older students added a design with a number for a call to action from the TRC Commission. On the back, there is a QR code that takes the viewer to the Kid-Friendly TRC Calls to action document. We paired up with our grade five buddies and distributed these around the school zone. Take a walk around, and if you see onea round you can scan the QR code on the back to learn.

Visiting the Roller Coasters

Mrs. Reeve's grade 5/6 class invited us to see their roller coaster project where they were asked if they could defy gravity. We listened to the grade 5/6 students as they showed us their inventions, and then got to try them out!

Turkey Trot

A fun Kinosayo tradition! We got to make turkey hats with our grade five buddies and then run the turkey trot.

Terry Fox Run

Students participated in our first school assembly of the year where we learned about Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope. We then participated in the Terry Fox run with the whole school. We cheered each other on and raised money for cancer research. Well done, everyone!

Bingo!

Such a fun way to review letters and letter sounds! Also some cute smiling faces in the library.

LIbrary

Visiting the stations in the library where we get to sign out books and then visit Mrs. Sutton's library stations.

Literacy and Numeracy stations

Participating in some literacy and numeracy stations. Ask your child about the Alphabet Arc and the math game called Battle!

Physical Education

Physical education with Mrs. Herman is so much fun.

Meet the students of 1S!

Welcome to 1S, everyone!

Look here!

Take a look at this section to find photos and descriptions of what we're doing in class. This can be a fun way to spark conversations around "what did you do at school today".
