Fretboards are used on a multitude of string instruments.Β Some have actual frets (like a guitar), and some do not (like violin).Β Regardless, when determining musical notes on a fretboard, we can use the same system for every instrument.
EXAMPLES OF FRETTED INSTRUMENTS:
Acoustic Guitar
Electric Guitar
12-String Guitar
Bass Guitar
Ukulele
EXAMPLES OF FRETLESS INSTRUMENTS:
Violin
Viola
Cello
Double Bass
BASIC CONCEPTS
The further away the fret is from your body, the LOWER the sound.
The closer the fret is to your body, the HIGHER the sound.
Strings can be tuned to ANY musical note, which determines the notes of every fret on the instrment.
The order of the notes on a fretboard FOLLOWS THE ORDER OF THE KEYS ON A PIANO.

GUITAR TABLATURE is just one of a few different types of guitar notation.Β This type of notation uses LINES and NUMBERS to tell you which frets/strings to play.
For the most part, musicians who are still learning how to read actual musical notes love to use guitar tabs.

CONS OF USING GUITAR TAB
Only tells you which pitches to play, but doesn't usually show you the rhythm.
It is easy to get hooked on tab and never try to learn actual musical notation. (EEK!)
Power chords are the simplest and most versatile chord type.Β The guitarist's hand remains in the same formation and moves around the guitar to play different chords.Β See the image link below.
The most common type of power chord uses only two (2) notes.Β The 2nd most common uses three (3) notes.Β You can have power chords that employ more than three notes as well.
Regardless of how many notes are used in a particular power chord, the index finger identifies the name of the chord you are playing.
Example 1: If your index fingers is on E3 when in the power chord formation...the chord would be called a G5 chord.
Example 2: If your index finger is on A6 when in the power chord formation...the chord would be called a D#5 chord.
