Teaching background:
I have a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Johns Hopkins University (1993) and a Master of Arts in Teaching, also from Johns Hopkins (1994).
In Pennsylvania, I have a Level II Certificiate to teach intermediate grades (4 - 8) in mathematics, science, social studies, and language arts. I have certification to teach religion from the Archdiocese of Harrisburg. I am also certified to teach high school (9-12) social studies and language arts in Pennsylvania. I have certification in Virginia and Texas for elementary school (K-8) and for social studies (middle school & high school).
Due to being a military spouse for the past 30 years, I’ve taught a wide variety of students. At Fort Hood, Texas, I taught high school social studies, including World Geography, Economics, Government, and AP US History. In Boston and New York, when my children were small, I worked part time as an SAT tutor, in the Army Education Center, and teaching college courses for Mt. St. Mary’s extension college at West Point in Economics and in History. In Norway, I taught third grade for three years at an international school. We arrived in Carlisle, PA for a one-year tour but soon found out that we would be staying permanently and then I applied for Pennsylvania certification. I began teaching part-time in the middle school in 2015 and became full-time in January 2017.
My students sometimes ask what has been my favorite subject and age to teach and I can honestly say that I have loved every teaching assignment I have had. I love learning, I love helping other people learn, and I enjoy working with other people, even when they are not my same age.
What do I do when I'm not at school?
I have three kids (an Army lieutenant, a graduate student, and a college freshman), a husband, friends, hobbies, and a house to keep me busy! I like reading, cooking, gardening, swimming at the Y, chatting with my friends, and travelling. When the weather is mild, I like being outdoors in the shade. In the summer, I like to travel when possible!
Where have I lived?
I was born in England, was very small when I lived in Iowa, grew up in a suburb of Milwaukee, went to college in Baltimore, and since then I have moved to Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Boston, New York, Germany, Rome (Italy), Norway, and now Carlisle. At various times I was fluent in Spanish & German and can speak some French, Italian, and Norwegian. It was a fun adventure but after moving so many times, I am happy to have landed permanently here in Carlisle.
