Parade Competition
This event is a regular street marching competition with no restrictions as to cadence, interval, or step. However, it should be understood that style of any marching unit must be in good taste, with uniformity of movement and precision noted as important factors. The judges will make decisions in these matters and their opinions will be reflected on their score sheets.
1. In order to insure that the judges are ready, bands will be held briefly at a point up to 300 feet before the judging area by the parade marshal. Drum majors should be instructed to be alert to this possibility. It is suggested that your band maintain sufficient space from the unit ahead so that you will make it through the judging area without stopping or slowing.
2. There are no turns in the judging area. The length of the area from start to finish line is 300 feet. The center of the reviewing stand is 150 feet from the starting line. The reviewing stand is to the marcher’s right. The width of the street in the judging area is 40 feet.
3. Bands will be using NY-PENN Parade Score Sheets. Essentially, the sheets provide the following breakdown:
Music General Effect 30 Points
Music Execution 20 Points
Marching Execution 30 Points
Marching General Effect 20 Points
4. Parade Marshals are there to help – work with them; let them help you.
5. All Bands should start forming for the parade by 12:45pm
6. The parade will move promptly at 1:00 to reach Main Street by the advertised 1:30 parade start.
7. During the parade, a judge will also select the following:
Best Color Guard in the Parade
Best Drum Major in the Parade
Best Drum Major Team in the Parade
Mass Retreat
Approximately ½ hour after the conclusion of the parade, all bands are to report to the football field (in uniform, please) and await the Mass Retreat. You will receive instructions as to both the exact placement of your band and the retreat procedures on the day of the pageant. Each band should have drum major(s) ready to receive any awards earned by the band
All trophies will be awarded at the retreat. Score sheets may be picked up at the Pageant Office (High School Main Office) immediately following the awards ceremony. In case of inclement weather, an informal retreat will be held in the gym.
