Honors English 10

Course Description

The overall focus of this course is the same as that of the English 10 course, but it is for those students who want to challenge themselves further. This not only means more reading and writing outside of class, but also more demanding reading and writing assignments. This course is designed for students who are able and willing to spend the extra time to be successful.

Students should:

  • Be prepared to read up to 50 - 100 pages of challenging texts per week. Much of the reading for the course will be assigned.
  • Come to discussions prepared, having read and researched material under study; they should explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence from texts and other research on the topic or issue to stimulate a thoughtful, well-reasoned exchange of ideas.
  • Propel conversations by posing and responding to questions that relate the current discussion to broader themes or larger ideas; actively incorporate others into the discussion; and clarify, verify, or challenge ideas and conclusions.
  • Respond thoughtfully to diverse perspectives, summarize points of agreement and disagreement, and, when warranted, qualify or justify their own views and understanding and make new connections in light of the evidence and reasoning presented.
  • Be prepared to delve into the meaning of texts far beyond basic comprehension. Close and rigorous study of materials. Thrust yourself into the texts. CRITICAL THINKING. Be prepared with questions, assessments and analysis.
