As ASCA Ethical Standards (2016) states, “there are benefits to virtual school counseling, but we also need to recognize, so as to mitigate, the limitations of virtual school counseling.” The benefits and limitations listed below are not comprehensive; however, they are points that should be considered regarding the online services provided.
Benefits to online counseling include:
The ability to continue our counseling relationships in non-traditional setting.
It may be easier to discuss personally significant topics without another person physically present.
Email/virtual counseling can take place in different places where you may feel comfortable.
It may be easier to express your thoughts and feelings more clearly.
It allows for time to think and reflect about things before reacting.
It may be easier to express lengthy or complex ideas or feelings via email.
Limitations to online counseling include:
Unintended viewers or recipients
Limited confidentiality
The inability to see some non-verbal cues that are often used in assessing needs of students.
Internet/Technology issues
Misunderstanding the context of an email message.
If you are ever in a crisis, or if you have an emergency, call 911 or go to your local emergency room.
Examples of non-emergencies:
I want to change my schedule
How many credits do I have?
I need to sign my PGP
Examples of emergencies:
I am being abused
I am not in a safe place
I want to harm myself
