A message from Miss Dunn

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: 28 August 2019

Probably the most beautiful spiritual journey the children of Springfield have is the preparation for the sacraments. Twenty-nine of our Grade Three girls are on the final stages of their journey towards the sacrament of the Eucharist, which takes place on Sunday 8 September, which is Mary’s birthday, at St Michael’s Catholic Church in Rondebosch.

Yesterday evening we completed the parents’ journey with their children with a beautiful Prayer Service in our Chapel. There was time for prayer and reflection, where we brought before God for the children who have completed their sacrament of Reconciliation and are about to receive Jesus at their First Holy Communion.

I share this reflection with you that was used in the Prayer service last night:

BEAUTITUDES FOR PARENTS

Blessed are those parents who make their peace with spilled milk and with mud, for of such is the kingdom of childhood.

Blessed is the parent who engages not in the comparison of his child with others, for precious unto each is the rhythm of his own growth.

Blessed are the fathers and mothers who have learned laughter, for it is the music of the child’s world.

Blessed and wise are those parents who understand the goodness of time, for they make it not a sword that kills growth but a shield to protect.

Blessed and mature are they who without anger can say "no", for comforting to the child is the security of firm decisions.

Blessed is the gift of consistency, for it is heart’s-ease in childhood.

Blessed are they who accept the awkwardness of growth, for they are aware of the choice between marred furnishings and damaged personalities.

Blessed are the teachable, for knowledge brings understanding, and understanding brings love.

Blessed are the men and women who in the midst of the unpromising mundane, give love, for they bestow the greatest of all gifts to each other, to their children, and—in an ever-widening circle — to their fellow men and women.

Today we celebrate the feast of St Augustine – one of the doctors of the Church. Please ask your girls to tell you the legend of St Augustine and the sea shell – it is a beautiful story. We wish the school family of St Augustine’s in Wynberg, our sister Dominican school, everything of the best on their feast day.

I held Assembly in both the Junior Primary and the Pre-Primary this morning, and there is enormous excitement around the Happy Hampers that are set up in the foyer of the hall. It really helps that all the Junior girls walk right past the hampers to get to Assembly! I would really like to thank all the parents for your contributions to the hampers – they are absolutely stunning – I am definitely buying some tickets and trying my luck! The draw for the hampers only happens next Friday, so there is still plenty of time to pop your tickets in the boxes.

Headmaster's Message

Fathers do Make a Difference

I asked one of our music staff, Albert Combrink if he would train up some of the girls who were attending the Fathers/ Daughters evening to sing Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘Bridge over Troubled Water’ at the Fathers/Daughters dinner. The girls sang it beautifully. The lyrics can be used in so many different situations, but at an evening like this, I used them to sum up what every father would like to say to his daughter:

When you're weary, feeling small

When tears are in your eyes, I'll dry them all

I'm on your side, oh, when times get rough

And friends just can't be found

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will lay me down

When you're down and out

When you're on the street

When evening falls so hard

I will comfort you

I'll take your part, oh, when darkness comes

And pain is all around

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will lay me down

It is not easy going through teenage years - the bridge between childhood and adolescence - as there are so many ‘sharks' and ‘piranhas' out there in the rivers which all teenagers have to cross in the form of alcohol, drugs, sex, clubs. Good fathers are there building the bridges for their daughters to use so that they can cross these dangers safely.

At the same time, fathers provide the role models against whom all future male friends and partners will be measured. Do they display the virtues of kindness, consideration and respect which one day our girls will expect from all men? I urged the fathers present to ‘make memories’ with their daughters as, before they know it, the teenage years would have flown past. Walking up the mountain together, a father/ daughter beach trip, a movie, a drive on a rainy day. I elicited a laugh when I suggested that they asked their daughters out for a date - dressing up, opening the door, pulling out the chair, choosing from a menu together.

Back at school after the dinner, I asked some of my classes what they are learning from their fathers.

My father is very successful in his business and I see how hard he works. He has taught me that if I am to be successful, I must work just as hard.’

‘I was always taking life far too seriously, especially in the junior grades. My Dad taught me a sense of humour and to see the funny side of life.’

‘My father has always insisted that I keep a balance about everything I do at school. I now sing in the choir and play sport - and if anything, my schoolwork has improved.’

‘Most of my friends say that they fight with their fathers. As I have grown up, I have found that I can speak to my father about so many things. He is such a good listener - and he only gives me advice if I ask for it.’

‘My Dad is super-strict. I always have a curfew but if I stick to it, everything is fine. I once blew it and he grounded me for over a month!’

And then came the ultimate accolade. ‘My Dad is always going on about what my mother has achieved. I hope I can live up to what my Mom has done.’

Virtually all the girls were appreciative that their fathers made the effort to come to the dinner. On one aspect there was no accord - whether their fathers looked good in pink. Some girls were openly embarrassed while others pretended to ignore the dress sense of their fathers. I, of course, was wearing a pink shirt with matching cuff links and was quite proud of myself - until someone made a remark that dressed in all that pink, clearly I was aspiring to be at Herschel. Not easy to have a come-back line to that!

I chatted to one of our Springfield mothers at hockey on Saturday. ‘That was such a special time for the two of them at the dinner. She needed that Dad-Time.’

On the way home, I kept wondering whether Simon and Garfunkel realise what effect their song would still be having nearly fifty years after they first sung it. We are now two generations on from that time and our children today, who are journeying over that bridge, still need the guiding hand and encouraging support of their fathers.

Well done to all who attended. It really was a good evening. It is a pity that no girl knew who Simon & Garfunkel were.

Weekly Inspiration

On Sunday, I had the privilege of attending the ordination of Aux Bishop of Cape Town, Sylvester David. A beautiful event which brought parishioners representing all our Catholic churches together - truly representative of the Body of Christ.

Bishop Sylvester DAVID Aux Bishop of Cape Town

Bishop Sylvester DAVID was ordained auxiliary bishop of Cape Town in a solemn liturgy held at the Cape Town city hall. He is also Titular Bishop of Gunugus.

The principal consecrator was Archbishop Stephen Brislin. The co-consecrators were Archbishop Jabulanu NXUMALO (who ordained Archbishop Brislin) and Cardinal Napier (who ordained Archbishop NXUMALO).

Congratulations to the Archdiocese of Cape Town!

Representatives from all the parishes of the archdiocese had attended. Bishop Sylvester's coat of arms is based on the words of the Oblate founder St Eugene de Mazenod: "Your destiny is to be apostles, and to tend within your hearts the sacred fire that the Holy Spirit lights there". His motto is from Eph 4:6, "one God and Father of all".

It was a joyous day filled with blessings.

We join our Holy Mother in prayers for the new bishop.

✝️

We cannot merely pray to you, O God, to end war;
For we know that You have made the world in a way that people must find their own path to peace within themselves and with their neighbours.
We cannot merely pray to You, O God, to end starvation;
For You have already given us the resources with which to feed the entire world, if we would only use them wisely.
We cannot merely pray to You, O God, to root out prejudice;
For You have already given us eyes with which to see the good in all people, if we would only use them rightly.We cannot merely pray to You, O God, to end despair;
For You have already given us the power to clear away slums and to give hope, if we would only use our power justly.
We cannot merely pray to You, O God, to end disease;
For You have already given us great minds with which to search out cures and healing, if we would only use them constructively.
Therefore we pray to You instead, O God, for strength, determination and will power,To do instead of just pray,To become instead of merely to wish.
Amen

At The McGregor Poetry Festival

...this past weekend during an open mic session, Sarah in Gr 4 (right), in front of an audience of 30 adults including her 'bashful' parents (because it was so unlike her) insisted on giving it a try. She recited a poem she learned at Springfield –"I Saw My Teacher on a Saturday" and was cheered and greeted with much applause at the end. The organisers were amazed at her confidence and invited her back, to participate next year.

Tamara Gr 2 competed in a Rythmic Gymnastics club competition and achieved the following results in Level 3

  • First in Freehand
  • Second in Ball
  • Second overall in the U9 / 10 age group.

Kiara Gr 4 competed in the course 1 Magic Contest at the College of Magic and was awarded first place.

Congratulations to Eve (Gr 7) and Lucy (Gr 3) Bosanquet who were commissioned as Altar Servers at Mass last Sunday

Counsellor's Corner

Dear Parents

Tips for helping your child resolve conflict and be a good friend

At the moment I’m inundated with requests from girls asking for help to resolve conflict with their friends. While I’m happy to help, this takes time away from the serious issues that I need to work with. I am trying to teach the girls how to resolve conflict without my assistance and would appreciate it if you could reinforce this from home. While conflict is unpleasant and stressful, it is a very normal part of life. Having skills to resolve conflict will help your child have more fulfilling friendships and enjoy better social experiences.

  1. While children have the right to feel strong emotions such as anger and frustration, it is important that they learn that shouting or being physically hurtful or intimidating does not help to resolve conflict. Helping children learn simple strategies for remaining calm, such as taking a deep breath or stopping and counting to ten is an important part of the process of effective conflict resolution.
  2. Help your child to recognise the value of using words and speaking nicely to resolve conflict. Learning to say how they feel and what they wish would happen, rather than attributing blame and overly focusing on the cause of the conflict, are also great skills to have.
  3. Talk regularly with children about the benefits of being kind, being fair and sharing with others, and catch them doing the right thing as often as you can – rewarding positive examples with lots of verbal encouragement.
  4. Teach your child that its okay to walk away if nothing else works. If we are feeling too angry or too sad, it is difficult to be our best selves. Sometimes a bit of time out can help children cool down and gain perspective.
  5. Role play imagined friendship scenarios at home - this gives them the experience and confidence to implement their newly learned skills in real life.
  6. Have regular playdates - playdates give your child the opportunity to develop friendships and to practice skills with you being there to support them; and while they are away from the stressors of school and larger group socialising.

If your daughter is really struggling with her friendships to the point that she can’t concentrate, please email or give me a ring and I will assist.

Warm regards
