It was a joy to host our Matric Class of 2020 last Tuesday when they and their parents returned to Springfield to celebrate the release of their Matric results. There was opportunity to highlight the top achievers, but also to acknowledge the hard work and personal accomplishments of each student. The WCED is hosting an online awards ceremony next Tuesday after which I will be in a position to give a complete overview of the results in our next newsletter.
On Friday, the girls will enjoy the opportunity to celebrate Springfield’s birthday. The actual birthday is on Sunday 7 March and plans were in place for our entire community to enjoy a celebratory Mass together in the gardens, but alas Covid, our longtime companion, stands in our way.
I do hope that all our pupils enjoy the fun that is planned for Friday and that it will become a treasured memory for all.
A birthday, particularly a 150th, is a momentous occasion not to be understated. It is a time to be joyful and to give thanks. It is a time to reflect on the substance and character of our history and contemplate how we should like our future story to unfold.
I read a quotation recently that likened a birthday to reaching a mountain peak. Upon reaching the summit we look back across the path taken and consider the journey that has been; it reflects a mélange of planning, execution, fun, challenge, hardship, failings and successes.
Atop our birthday peak, we also get to gaze into the distance and enjoy a vista of opportunities that lie ahead. The next 150 years of Springfield are ahead of us and I invite you all to participate in her next remarkable chapter.

HAPPY 150TH BIRTHDAY, SPRINGFIELD

“Here’s to strong women. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.”
~Maya Angelou
As we approach our school’s 150th Birthday on Sunday, the above quote by Maya Angelou resonates, as I am reminded of the six strong Dominican women who left their Irish homeland in 1863 to travel to Cape Town to establish Catholic Dominican schools here in South Africa. Eight years after arriving, having already established St Mary’s and the Dominican School for the Deaf in the city bowl in Cape Town, they travelled to Wynberg in 1871 and bought our beautiful campus, Springfield, and established our school. Since that day in March 150 years ago, strong women have worked here and strong women have completed their schooling here. Each generation of Sisters, teachers and girls has followed in the footsteps of the previous generation, and we today are proud to be standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before us. The strong women who were educated here at Springfield span all corners of the earth today, making a difference in the lives of others and carrying out the mission of our founder, Dominic: to praise… to bless… to preach…, while always serving with the Dominican motto Veritas – Truth.
May we live this tradition and continue to raise strong women, to praise, to bless and to preach.
Lord Jesus,
As once you called St Dominic to preach the gospel,
so now send new preachers into your harvest.
Give them courage, wisdom and grace
to make them witnesses to your death, resurrections and return to glory.
Through your intercession of Mary, patroness of the Order of Preachers,
may we bring true faith and light to brighten the darkness.
Amen.

“We cannot do everything,
and there is a sense of
liberation in realizing that.
This enables us to do
something, and to
do it very well.
It may be incomplete,
but it is a beginning,
a step along the way,
an opportunity for the
Lord's grace to enter
and do the rest.”
“Having a birthday is like reaching a higher peak on a mountain.
Pause to admire the view;
reflect on how far you have come.”

Dear Springfield Community
I’d like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Dominican Sisters - past and present, whose legacy we celebrate and uphold today. The enormity of their vocation and the radiance of their scope of influence continue to permeate the beautiful spaces within the school. If the walls could speak to us, what would they whisper? We acknowledge that while some spaces hold joy, some hold pain and the 150th anniversary reminds us to reflect on our journey to this point. We’ve navigated through some difficult times in our South African history and today we are mindful of our many blessings.
Our journey ahead will be punctuated by moments of deep discernment and continuous growth and awareness.
Congratulations Sr Francis Krige and all the Sisters who still have a vested heart in Springfield. We salute you, we thank you and pray for God’s continued blessing and grace on your lives.
Congratulations to all past and present staff, pupils and parents.
Floreat Springfield, and our motto Veritas!

Later this week you will receive an update from our TSC. This update will include a memorandum, written by the Matrics of 2020. It gives detail to things that stood in the way of them feeling a sense of belonging at Springfield. The document must be shared because there are currently pupils at the School who have experienced all or some of what is written in the memorandum and it is hoped that they will hold the School to account for addressing those issues. For those who have not experienced any of what is addressed, it is important that they too read the document to make them aware of the difficulties and struggles experienced by their peers, to ensure that these actions are not perpetuated.

Eva Henry as Dominic the Dominican dog, with the blood buddy, promoting donation.
Springfield held a very successful blood donation clinic on Monday, 22nd February. We were thrilled with the turnout and the number of pints donated. The statistics were: 70 people arrvied to donate, 43 full units were donated and 10 new donors signed up. This is the greatest quantity of pints donated at a single Springfield clinic in over a year. Donations made at this clinic alone will save the lives of approximately 129 people! Thank you to all parents, students, teachers and members of the Springfield community who arrived to donate. The next clinic will be held on Tuesday, 11th May.

An email was sent to all parents last week Friday with a WhatsApp link and QR code to join the individual class and grade WhatsApp groups. Should you wish to join these groups, please follow the link or scan the QR code. We have been advised that some of these emails were directed to parents spam or junk mail. Please check these folders for the email. Each class or grade has their own unique link. The groups will be for communication from your class reps.
We have had a request from the Wynberg Military Hospital to please be aware that St John's Road and Hospital Road are the roads used for the access of emergency vehicles to the Military Hospital. Please be aware of this when entering and exiting the school campus and do not park in the road blocking this emergency access route.
Out of stock at the moment.
Access control stickers are used at the entrance of the junior school gate to monitor access to the campus for security purposes. It is vital every vehicle has a white 2021 access sticker as we take every measure to ensure our students are safe at all times.
Each family receives one sticker, thereafter the cost is R10.00.
