The Springfield College Occupational Therapy (OT) Department offers a free weekly support group for people living with stroke and their caregivers. The group meets in a virtual format every Thursday from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Facilitated by Kathy Post, Professor, with the assistance of 1 or 2 OT graduate students, the group provides opportunities to meet other stroke survivors from Western Massachusetts, and to share challenges, successes, questions, and resources.
Please be mindful of these guidelines for all group members
Recognize and respect that every person's experience of stroke is different
Information shared in meetings must remain confidential
Support others through active listening and words of encouragement
Remain non-judgmental
Help ensure that everyone has time to contribute to discussions, but respect others who choose not to share
Participate from a quiet space, with little to no background noise. If you must converse with someone in your environment, please mute yourself.
I am an occupational therapist who has taught in the OT and PT Programs at Springfield College for more than 30 years, following a clinical career working with children and adults with a variety of neurological conditions. I have published a number of articles and presented many workshops with a focus on assistive technology and teaching/learning, including wheelchair seating and positioning, computer access, and Universal Design for Learning. I have worked with many people with strokes and have been involved in support and activity groups for stroke survivors for many years. I have a BA in psychology, an MS in occupational therapy, and a PhD in special education. I live in a big old house in Springfield, Mass with my husband, and I love reading, music, woodworking, knitting, sewing, and walking in my wonderful neighborhood.
