1. You may only read a book you haven’t read before.
2. Your book must be at least 150 pages and it must be a chapter book unless approved by me (some nonfiction books may be shorter though). You will read one to two books a quarter.
3. You will keep track of all the books you read throughout the year (even those that you choose to abandon).
4. After reading each book, you will either fill out a Book Report Form (for a fictional book), write a detailed one-page summary, including important facts you learned (for a nonfiction/ informational book), or you will complete one of the Book Report Projects.
5. You are required to complete a minimum of FOUR (4) Projects this year. You will complete and turn in a Book Report Project in each of the four quarters during the year. In addition to this, you will also complete a book report form or a detailed summary during quarters two and three. You must choose at least four different projects to complete throughout the year!
6. There will be SIX (6) rounds of Reader’s Workshop this year. During each Round of Reader’s Workshop, you will read a minimum of one book. There will be scheduled due dates for book reports/projects that will be assigned throughout the school year.
For every book that you have read, you must complete either a Book Report Form (fiction book only), a one-page summary (nonfiction book only), or a Book Report Project (for fiction OR nonfiction). Although you may choose to do as many Book Projects as would like, at the very least, you are responsible for completing at least four (4) of the following projects throughout the year. At least one per quarter…
Book Report Project choices include the following:
1. Brochure Book Report: including a creatively designed brochure; can be hand-written or typed. Your brochure should include all appropriate and necessary information for the genre of your book (see rubric). The Brochure should also advertise the book to others and would highlight the characters, main events, and major themes, or important information if it is a nonfiction.
2. Oral Book Report: presentation in front of class including the necessary information for your book (see rubric). You would also be asked to share your own review of the book, and you must include at least one creative element to your presentation.
3. Tri-fold Poster Board Book Report: should include all appropriate and necessary information for your book (see rubric), but would be displayed on a poster in an artistic/creative manner. The poster should advertise the book to others, and should highlight the characters, main events, major themes, or important information if it is a nonfiction book.
4. Shoe-Box Book Report: including all information from rubric, but displayed in a report Shoebox, complete with objects that represent the characters, main events, and themes from the book. Creating a diorama is acceptable as well, but all necessary information still needs to be included. Be sure to include a short summary of the book as well.
5. Google Slides or Sites Book Report: including all necessary information from rubric, but would be displayed in a Google Slide Presentation, or on a Google Site. The presentation should highlight the characters, main events, and major themes, or important information if it is a nonfiction book. You would also be expected to share your presentation with the class.
6. Video Broadcasting Book Report: including all necessary information from rubric, but would be a videotaped report for this book. This involves videotaping either a commercial, news report, or interview (using appropriate props) that would persuade other people to read your book.
7. Other project ideas!?...ABC Book, Coat Hanger Book Report, Lap Book, Brown Bag Book Report? Additional project choices may be added throughout the year, and/or may be approved as well! Present your ideas to us! We are happy to allow you to do other project ideas that you may have!
*Remember-regardless of which project you choose, remember to keep important portions of the book a mystery! We don’t need to know everything, and we don’t want to ruin it for other readers!
