History

Stanley Spofforth was the youngest son of a successful builder and joiner of York, Thomas Spofforth, whose family had farmed for the Earl of Carlisle at Castle Howard. Stanley became an expert in land & trust taxation and in the 1930’s joined local accountants Arthur Stubbs & Son in Worthing. The firm traded as Spofforth & Prince during the 1940’s and opened new offices in Storrington, and London. Stanley was president of the Institute of Taxation from 1951 to 1954, and brought his three sons into the business, Michael, Jeremy and Ian. Spofforth Hews and Burn was the name of the firm in the 1970’s, opening in Chichester.

Michael’s three children all joined the firm, Joanna Genoni, Mark Spofforth OBE, and Alex Spofforth. Alex was on the Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales at the same time that Mark was ICAEW president.

The firm became Spofforths LLP which was then taken over by Kreston. Alex Spofforth decided in 2018 to re-create a Spofforth family business to get back to the roots of what the firm had originally been, a family firm for families and what they do.. Spofforth.

Alex Spofforth is Chairman of the charity The Officers Association, which helps officers of HM Forces into employment opportunities. He is also Deputy Chair at Help Musicians UK (the Musicians Benevolent Fund), and a Finance Trustee at the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO).
