Plagiarism & Academic Integrity

Plagiarism and Academic Integrity

Plagiarism is defined by the online Oxford Dictionary as, “the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own”.  Here at WHS, it is important to foster and maintain student academic honesty and integrity in their work.

As a result, confirmed plagiarism of any kind, including the use of AI generated apps and websites, will result in an automatic grade of zero, following a conversation with the student.  Measures have been put in place to safeguard against the use of AI technology including the purchase of an AI detection program for use by all teachers, the use of Google Docs for all digitally created and submitted assessments, and comprehensive teaching around plagiarism in the classroom to ensure student understanding and awareness.  If plagiarism occurs, both the student and parents/caregivers will be notified, and a plan for re-submission may be considered, at the discretion of the teacher. Please note, a mark of zero may also remain.

More Information:

What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is taking someone else's ideas and passing them off as your own.

There are four main types of plagiarism:

Direct plagiarism - this is when you directly copy someone else's work either by retyping part or all of it, or by copying and pasting it into your project.

Use of AI Technology:

AI technology is relatively new on the scene, and is bringing a new dimension to the definition of plagiarism.

There are many different types of AI technology out there, and many of these tools can be used appropriately to help students further their understanding of different topics, however, when it comes to using AI technology to complete writing assignments, that is considered cheating and will be treated as such. If students wish to use AI in the process of research, they should ask and clear it with me ahead of time.

Original Reports (Google Classroom)

For major assignments on Google Classroom, original reports will be administered to check for plagiarism. This feature is also useful to students as they can check their writing for plagariasm before they submit it.
