There have been a number of changes to reporting in Prairie Spirit School Division that will come into effect starting in the 2022-23 school year. To enhance understanding of these changes, the following documents have been provided.
Summary of Changes
For a summary of the changes being implemented at the start of the 2022-23 school year, see the document located to the left. More detailed information on each area can be found below.
Reporting on Academics
Grade 1-9
The document to the left shows the academic achievement scale for grades 1-9 that will be used in Prairie Spirit School Division starting in 2022-23. Some items of note:
Four levels of achievement and two levels where the outcome has not been achieved are available to use. The levels from beginning to mastery are different levels of meeting the outcome, from novice to sophisticated.
Scores/grades are now awarded with alpha codes, not numbers.
The language that will be used on progress reports will be the student friendly language. The language for PSSD Educators is to help define the levels enough to create consistency between PSSD teachers using the grades.
Depending on school grade composition, some grade 9 classes may use the percentage scale used by grade 10-12 classes.
Parent/Student Version
As a support, the document to the left is also included - it is what is being shared with parents so that they know what language will be used to share academic learning progress.
Grade 10-12
In grades 10-12, academic achievement continues to be reported by percentage grade.
Having said this, many teachers of grade 10-12 classes find it very useful to assess by level and then convert to a percentage grade when reporting. To aid in inter-rater reliability (consistency in grading between teachers) the scale to the left has been developed. While not mandatory, PSSD teachers using a levelled grading system are encouraged to work off this document.
Reporting on Behaviours - All Grades
The grading scale used to score learning behaviours for all grades in Prairie Spirit School Division is changing. There will be four levels of achievement and one level of insufficient evidence. The four levels below are frequency based (describing how often the learning behaviours are observed) and align with the agreed upon terms used by the Ministry of Education in Saskatchewan. They include:
Consistently
Usually
Sometimes
Rarely
Synonyms are given for each level in the document to the left to aid in clarity.
The learning behaviours that will be reported on in Prairie Spirit School Division are changing as well. There will be different behaviours reported on for elementary and for high school. (Middle schools will adopt one of the formats, depending on whether a homeroom philosophy is used or not - schools will work with their Learning Superintendent to determine this.)
Elementary students will be assessed on eight learning behaviours, grouped into four categories, while high school students will be assessed on three learning behaviours. For all of these, the intent is to make the learning behaviours observable so that the frequency scale noted above can be readily used to grade. Further details can be found in the document to the left.
Progress Reports
There is a difference in how progress is reported for elementary and high school students. Progress for middle school students will vary depending on whether or not the class configuration is set up as a homeroom (one teacher instructs the vast majority of the courses for a set of students). The characteristics for each format of reporting is listed below:
Elementary Progress Reports
Progress reports will change to include the following:
ELA and Math will report academic achievement by strand. (This is a continuation of existing practice.)
Strands for ELA: Compose and Create, Comprehend and Respond, Assess and Reflect
Strands for Math: Number, Patterns and Relationships, Shape and Space, Statistics and Probability
All other subjects will report an overall score per subject. (This is a change from past practice.)
Comments will be included for ELA, Math, and one other general comment box.
Behaviour scores are reported once per homeroom (not per subject).
Attendance will be reported once per homeroom.
Students working on outcomes outside of grade level will have this noted with an asterisk (*)
High School Progress Reports
Progress reports will continue to include the following:
One overall percentage score per subject
Behaviour scores per subject
Comment per subject
Attendance per subject
