“We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.” ~ Anais Nin
Author Anais Nin says that the world that we see is not necessarily the world that exists. This year, we are going to be exploring and expanding our understanding of the world. This course will seek to explore the foundations of our planet so that you can more fully engage in solutions to global challenges.
"Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.” ~ Mark Twain
The beginning of Twain's quote says that travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness. Unfortunately, we won't be going on field trips like Ms. Frizzle and the magic school bus, but we will reading, listening, and watching materials from across the world. For our assignments, we will be gathering voices from individuals, groups and governments with broad and varying perspectives. Listening to these voices will help to develop a complex understanding of the issues our planet is facing.
I grew up in South Jersey in a town called Vineland. Vineland can best be summed up by knowing that it was the birthplace of grape juice and it was once the chicken capital of the world.
I know, I know, with amazing things like that, who would ever leave? I did. I enrolled at one of the best colleges in the world, Rutgers University. (If this last statement made you roll your eyes, you are in for a long year.) I loved college so much, I've gone back and gotten two more degrees there.
I started teaching in Scotch Plains-Fanwood in 2006. My first assignment was 8th grade in Terrill Middle. I relocated to SPFHS the following school year and have taught, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade Social Studies.
I was asked to join the Global Education Advisory Committee where I worked with students, teachers, administrators, Board of Education members, parents and community leaders to develop curriculum so that SPF students could develop a global perspective.
One of the best things to come out of our district's hard work is the class that you are enrolled in!
I know for many of us, remote learning has its advantages and disadvantages. To help ease some of my anxiety, I took a training seminar with google to make sure I am up to speed with all of their latest features. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns with any of the technology we are using.
I personally am really looking forward to our class this year. The topics and materials we will be covering this year will help you to more fully understand and formulate your own opinions about our place in the world.
