Supporting Student Science Learning

Resource developed by the Council of State Science Supervisors (CSSS) with recommended actions that families can take to support their children learn science. Recommendations are based on the NGSS and include additional resources that are hyperlinked within the PDF.

The National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) has designed sensemaking tasks or a Daily Do that families can use to engage their children in authentic science learning. Daily Dos are organized for Elementary, Middle School, and High School. There is also a page of Daily Dos that are specifically designed for parents/families.


Indigenous Education

These activities are designed to be used right outside your door! With your family, you can explore your relations with water, food, and plant and bird relatives. Each activity is explained in a two-page overview document which you can download or print. Some activities have extra pages that serve as worksheets to help you do the activity.

Learning in Places, a project with the goal of creating more culturally and community relevant, field-based learning opportunities for students, has been posting weekly Learning Engagements for K-3 students and their families. These materials were designed to support students and their families to engage in science that matters in the places they live. The materials facilitate families to ask and explore “should we” questions that engage the intersection of natural and social phenomena in our everyday lives.

Engaging activities and recipes for kids that are easy to do, require minimal materials, and are 'no screen'.


CoBuildAtHome – Sharing Activities for Kids and Families at Home was created by educators and researchers to help youth and their caregivers to spend quality time together building and creating during Covid. The activities are designed to be completed with free or low-cost materials, supplies, and tools found commonly in homes.

A collection of STEM activities for all grades. Link will open the browse option. Narrow search by adjusting grade levels and curriculum type. Sprinkles are abbreviated versions of the most popular activities and are designed to take 60 minutes or less. Activities can take longer and are focused on project based learning. Maker Challenges are intended to promote design thinking (long term).

LSC at Home includes Facebook live streams Mondays through Fridays. Additional resources and past videos can be found here as well. Check out LSC Junior, LSC Animals, Planetarium Online, virtual trivia, Experiments to try at home, and much more.

New Jersey's own Adventure Aquarium in Camden has a Youtube Channel with new videos are added daily.
