Hello and thanks for taking the time to explore my website! My name is Mr. Rittner and I have been teaching at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School in Union County, New Jersey since September of 2014. I started out as a Freshmen biology teacher but am currently the head of the environmental science department. I helped launch the school's AP Environmental Science program in the Fall of 2016 and then the Academic Environmental Science program in the Fall of 2020.
My guiding philosophy in education is to provide students with authentic, meaningful experiences in order to cultivate a lifelong sense of wonder and fascination with scientific learning as well as environmental stewardship. This is the driving force behind our citizen science projects and EEF grant-based wildlife conservation programs. I also believe that being a teacher means being a mentor; when a student “needs” you, you always go to bat for them. You have to be their constant champion and most ardent cheerleader.
Feel free to review the resources below to learn more about who I am as an educator!
