Dear Speyer Lower School Families,

We know that the Speyer student never ceases to learn, which is why we closed out the 2024-2025 school year with our annual tradition of Lower School students meeting their potential homeroom teachers and receiving their 2025 Summer Assignment! Each student received their very own copy of the associated book as well as a print out of the assignment itself. (You can also find the assignments linked below.)

We see the summer assignment as an essential part of the accelerated learner's journey. It is meant to channel their enthusiasm during their time away and use it as a catalyst for building community in the first moments of the new school year. Rather than another thing to add to the “to do list,” our intention is that the assignment will spark interesting conversations that can live within the meaningful summer memories you hope to create.

Here's a bit more information about our design choices.

The assignments are intentional. They are designed around the Humanities theme and content for the upcoming school year as well as the integration of reading, writing, and other disciplines. Students will share their projects across the first couple of weeks of school. These valuable routines set the tone for a class community that values one another's ideas, knowledge, and interests.

The assignment is flexible. Speyer teachers know what it means to be flexible and these assignments are designed with that at the center. They have choice. Perhaps it will be something you do in a single afternoon. Maybe it will become a passion for your children that they’ll revisit across the summer. Either way, they’re designed to adapt to your child's (and family’s) needs.

The assignment are meant to highlight your child's work. While some parts of the assignment might require minor adult assistance, the work should be that of your child(ren). It’s most beneficial if the assignment gives an authentic look at the child as a learner.

It is for the reasons above that the assignment is required and we ask that it be submitted to your child's homeroom teachers no later than Monday, September 8th. If you have any questions regarding the summer assignment, please reach out to sgabrielli@speyerlegacyschool.org

On this site, you will also find additional enrichment and practice opportunities, including book lists, nature explorations, and Math challenges. We hope all of these tools and more satiate your learning quests during the summer months.

Ever Onward,

Sam and the Lower School Teachers
