Library Policies and Procedures
Our library supports the learning and reading needs of nearly 700 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. It is more than just a place to check out books—it’s a welcoming space where students grow academically and socially. Throughout the year, we host two Scholastic Book Fairs that help promote a love of reading and bring families into the library. We also engage students with fun and creative events, such as a pumpkin character contest in the fall, a Santa Shop in December, and Read Across America Week in the spring. In addition to inspiring a love of reading and read-alouds, we teach information literacy, digital citizenship, and research skills. Our diverse collection reflects the interests and experiences of our students, and we work hard to ensure that every child feels seen, welcomed, and inspired in our library.Â
Each class visits the library during their designated special area time, once a week, for 50 minutes. During this time, students will listen to a read-aloud, participate in a lesson and an activity, and check in and out their books.Â
Students check in and out library books each week when they visit the library. Library books are due the following class.Â
Kindergarten starts checking out books after fall break. They can check out one book from our "everybody" section.Â
First and second-grade students can check out one book from any section.Â
Third and Fourth-grade students can check out two books from any section.Â
Fifth-grade students can check out two to three books from any section. They can also check out audiobooks (Playaways), but ONLY if a signed permission form is returned.Â
All books are due the following class.Â
We do not charge fines for overdue books; however, lost or damaged books must be paid for or replaced.
Students are encouraged to use the "Five Finger Book Test" to check that they can read a book-Â
Open up the book to any page, read the page, and put up a finger up for each word you don't know.Â
One Finger- Easy!
Two Fingers- Just Right!
Three Fingers- A little tricky, but you can try!Â
Four Fingers- This is too difficult! Only check this out if you are going to read this with your parents/guardians.Â
Five Fingers- Too Difficult. Only check this out if a parent/guardian will read this to you. Otherwise, try again next year!Â
