What does a career in Sports Medicine look like?
A career in sports medicine involves providing medical care and support to athletes and individuals engaged in physical activities. Sports medicine professionals, including sports physicians, physical therapists, and athletic trainers, focus on preventing, diagnosing, and treating injuries related to sports and exercise. They may work in sports teams, rehabilitation centers, or private practices, helping individuals recover from injuries, improve performance, and maintain overall health. A strong understanding of human anatomy, exercise physiology, and injury management is essential in this field.

Career Pathway:
There are hundreds of related careers in the Health Science Career Cluster, some more similar than others. By classifying these similar careers into narrower categories called pathways, it helps individuals look at a range of options when it comes to employment in an area with similar skills and knowledge. Although this system of classifying careers into clusters and pathways is helpful in navigating career options, it is not the only way. This module is more specifically aligned with the Therapeutic Services Career Pathway. Individuals in this pathway share a set of skills and knowledge which expand upon the skills and knowledge needed in the Health Science Career Cluster. Individuals in the Therapeutic Services Career Pathway demonstrate the following skills and knowledge:
Utilize communication strategies to answer patient/client questions and concerns on planned procedures and goals.
Communicate patient/client information among healthcare team members to facilitate a team approach to patient care.
Utilize processes for assessing, monitoring and reporting patient’s/clients’ health status to the treatment team within protocol and scope of practice.
Evaluate patient/client needs, strengths and problems in order to determine if treatment goals are being met.

By working through this Health Career Area you will begin your journey toward developing the skills and knowledge to be successfully employed in this pathway. By taking your experience and building on it by applying these skills in different scenarios you will be better prepared to take the next step in your educational path. At the end of this module, you will select two of the related careers and describe the means by which to achieve those opportunities.
