What does a career in Childhood Development look like?
A career focusing on childhood development involves working to support the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social growth of children. Professions in this field include early childhood educators, child psychologists, pediatricians, and child life specialists. These professionals contribute to creating nurturing environments, providing educational guidance, and addressing developmental needs to ensure children reach their full potential.

Career Pathway:
There are hundreds of related careers in the Human Services Career Cluster, some more similar than others. By classifying these similar careers into narrower categories called pathways, it helps individuals look at a range of options when it comes to employment in an area with similar skills and knowledge. Although this system of classifying careers into clusters and pathways is helpful in navigating career options, it is not the only way. This module is more specifically aligned with the Early Childhood Development & Services Career Pathway. Individuals in this pathway share a set of skills and knowledge which expand upon the skills and knowledge needed in the Human Services Career Cluster. Individuals in the Early Childhood Development & Services Services Career Pathway demonstrate the following skills and knowledge:
Demonstrate communication techniques with children to facilitate ongoing development and enhance learning.
Communicate effectively with fellow staff members to facilitate child development activities.
Maintain working knowledge of child development licensing and certification organizations to keep abreast of current procedures and changes.
Create and maintain relationships between staff and parents/family members to encourage involvement and facilitate child development and learning.
Evaluate safety and sanitation procedures associated with the early childhood education environment to assure compliance and prevent potential hazards.
Adhere to ethical and legal responsibilities, laws and regulations to protect children and families.
Apply principles of child growth and development, including social, emotional, physical and cognitive milestones, to provide comprehensive program offerings.
Evaluate curriculum for inclusiveness of children with special needs.
