At Southern Lehigh High School, Color Guard is a co-curricular activity during the fall marching band season, which means that is is both a fall semester course (0.5 credit) and an extra-curricular activity, with required practices and performances. Please see the FAQ on this page and scroll to the bottom to view the syllabus and course project information. Students currently enrolled in the course should visit our Google Classroom for lessons, assignments, and announcements.
Beginning in 2024-25, Southern Lehigh is also offering an extracurricular indoor color guard program during the winter and spring months. The indoor color guard is a co-ed activity open to any student in grades 7-12. We practice two days a week after school, and perform at local Tournament Indoor Association (TIA) competitions in the scholastic novice class.
Southern Lehigh Color Guard also runs an introductory color guard program for 5th and 6th graders at JPL Intermediate School, in conjunction with Mrs. Cooperman's choral program. The 5th and 6th grade color guard practices once a week on Wednesdays from the last week of February to the first week of May, and performs at the 5th and 6th grade spring chorus concert.
For more information about any of Southern Lehigh's color guard programs, or our TIA home indoor competition on February 15, 2025, please contact Mrs. Spritzer at spritzerm@slsd.org

Frequently Asked Questions about SLHS Color Guard (Fall Marching Band Season)
How do I sign up? At Southern Lehigh, color guard is co-curricular, meaning that while it does have an extra-curricular component, it is also a course that students take for credit! To join color guard, you must enroll in the one-semester Color Guard course, found in the Program of Studies under the Music Department electives. We meet during Block 1 on odd days in the first semester, and on Day 1 of the six-day Spartan period cycle.
How often does the color guard practice? In the pre-season, the color guard meets for practice (often with the full marching band) to learn basic skills and as much of the field show as possible to prepare for the first football game. During July, we practice two evenings per week, and in the first week of August the full marching band has a week-long camp, with will full practice days. For the rest of August, we practice three evenings per week. After school starts, the color guard practices on Mondays after school until we finish learning all of the field show choreography (usually through mid-October). We also practice with the full marching band every Friday after school before football games. All practices are mandatory; however, there is limited flexibility in the summer months. Absence requests must be communicated as soon as possible with Mrs. Spritzer.
Where and when does the color guard perform? The color guard performs as part of the marching band at all home and away football games, where we entertain the crowd with our field show, and we also support our team by cheering and dancing in the stands. In addition to games, we perform at the Homecoming pep rally, the Coopersburg Community Day, the Coopersburg Halloween Parade, and one marching band festival or competition each fall if the schedule allows. The tentative schedule is provided in May, and the full schedule is confirmed in July, but is subject to change. All performances are mandatory.
Is there a cost associated with color guard? Yes, all members are required to purchase their own shoes and gloves which may be worn from year to year. They are also required to purchase a matching performance day t-shirt and any base layer items for their uniform. The purchase of a color guard jacket and any spirit wear is optional.
