DAILY/WEEKLY

Word Folder:  First Grade Trick Words will be given. Words will be practiced/reviewed in school. You can always review at home too. The students will use and see these words in the classroom, as well as in reading and writing. Make sure your student is able to practice as much as possible. Extra ways to practice: look in books and magazines for words, create words using yarn or shaving cream, write sentences with words....any way you can; have fun!!

Phonics: We will work daily on letters and sounds. Each day/week we will focus on a weekly sound pattern.  We will complete daily lessons and activities that enforce Phonemic Awareness. We will use the Fundations program, as well as daily Heggerty lessons. Please encourage phonics practice at home!

Reading: Your child, myself, and the class will be working together daily to read and discuss different stories on a first grade level. The hope is to focus on different reading skills/ strategies, as well as comprehension. We will be using a NEW reading program called; Wit and Wisdom. Your child will come home with a new book or passage every other night and will be expected to read/review at home. Please verify your child has read the story. The more practice with words/vocabulary the better the reader. 

Math: Topics 1-15. We complete each chapter to the needs in our class. You will notice the year will build a lot upon addition and subtraction. You will notice many strategies being taught. Please encourage your child to choose the best strategy for them. We will be working together to learn and find out the strategy that works best for us.
