ELA

Spelling:

• Spelling HW will be given every other week. Click Here for a copy of our spelling menu.
• Students will pretest on a Friday and have their posttest on the following Friday.
• Challenge, Regular, and Adapted lists will be assigned based on pretest scores.
• Spelling City will be used and students can practice using this website. www.spellingcity.com
• Spelling homework will be assigned.

Accelerated Reader/Homework

• Accelerated Reader will be a way to track independent reading.
• Students will select books that are AR books (there are thousands of books that will work for this!)
• Check AR Book Finder to see if your book is on the AR list, the reading level, and how many points it is. Students will have points goals for each marking quarter. Students are able to earn points on each book test they take IF they pass with a 70% or more.

Writing

• We will focus on the six writing traits: Organization, Ideas and Content, Voice, Word Choice, Sentences Fluency, and Conventions. Students will be expected to be writing multi-paragraph writing pieces by the end of the year. We will write narrative, informational, and opinion writing pieces throughout the year. Students will also write multiple free writes in a writing journal.

Reading Street

**Reading tests will be given every other week on a Friday, unless otherwise announced.

• Unit 1: Puzzles and Mysteries
• Unit 2: Adventures West
• Unit 3: Patterns in Nature
• Unit 4: Reaching for Goals

Grammar

• Grammar will also come from our Reading Street program. Students will learn and apply parts of speech, comma rules, punctuation, paragraphing, and sentence structure.
