Practice Schedule

2/13/2020

For all team members competing this weekend at Harvard, please report to the bus loading area at 7:45 AM, so we can leave at 8. You will need $175.00 for the hotel and money for 7 meals. Harvard is providing breakfast and lunch for everyone Saturday and Sunday. We should be home ~10:00 PM Monday 2/17. We are staying at the Doubletree Boston Bayside.

For those competing next Saturday at our PHSSL #8 State Qualifier at Holy Redeemer HS, please note the schedule above. You will need money for lunch. We will probably not need to do a dinner stop on the way home.

Since we have had all of our ADFL competitions, at the end of this practice schedule is a list of who has qualified to the ADFL National Qualifier 2/29/20. The top 3 places at the national qualifier will qualify to the NCFL Grand National Tournament Memorial Day weekend in Chicago, IL.

Speaking of the national qualifier, keep in mind that if you are competing at a particular qualifier for states or nationals, it is expected that you can compete at the next level. So if you’re competing 2/22 at the PHSSL State Qualifier for District #8, you are planning to go 3/12-14 to the PHSSL State Championships. Competing 2/29 at the ADFL National Qualifier means you’re planning to compete at the NCFL Grand National Tournament 5/22-25. Competing at the Valley Forge NSDA District Tournament 3/7-8 means you’re planning on competing at the NSDA National Tournament 6/13-20. The reason I mention this is that it is not fair for you to compete at a qualifying tournament knowing you will not be competing at the next level. Your very presence in the tournament affects pairing and results. If you need to change any tournament for which you are signed up, please let me know ASAP.

One team tradition coming up is that after the ADFL National Qualifier on 2/29, we have a team bowling trip. We usually meet at the Chinese Buffet behind Earl Bowling in Quakertown for dinner and then walk to the bowling alley for a couple of games. You do not have to compete 2/29 to join us for dinner and bowling. It’s open to all team members. Please let me know if you plan to attend, so I can figure out how many will be there.

One quick note for the Valley Forge NSDA District Tournament, 3/7-8, they will be running House Congress starting Friday. Senate and House will run and finish on Saturday. Debate and speech will run both Saturday and Sunday. If you would like a sneak peek of the schedule that weekend, let me know. Also, if you are interested, the Valley Forge District is allowed to send to nationals two World Schools teams which are parliamentary debate teams. If you are interested, there is an application that needs to be filled out. Also, the NSDA created a Big Questions Debate event a few years ago. The national qualifier for this will be Saturday March 28. We are allowed to send 4 entries, one person each, in Big Questions, but the judge quota is quite high. For one entry, 2 judges, two entries 3 judges, three entries 4 judges, four entries 6 judges. Again, if you’re interested in this event, let me know as soon as you can.

For future planning, due to a different scheduling conflict, we have had to shift our spaghetti dinner back to Friday April 17. This would be the Friday the week before our tournament. We will be sharing the cafeteria with the MiniThon setup for 4/18, but both Mrs. Tocci and I believe we can work things out. Our Spring Car Wash will be the Saturday after our tournament May 2 with a rain date of May 9.

One other item to start thinking is our tournament, Saturday April 25. Since this is our invitational, everyone is expected to compete or help out. Parents are also needed to help. We will have a hoagie sale for student lunches, a snack stand throughout the day and our judges’ lounge. In the past our judges’ lounge was handled by the parents of one of our alumni. Unfortunately last year they told me that they are no longer able to do so. If any of your parents would be interested in coordinating the judges’ lounge please let me know ASAP. I have an idea of what we can do, but obviously we will need help putting everything together that day.

I think that’s it for now. Feel free to stop by 207 if you have any questions.

Good Luck to our competitors this weekend at the Harvard University Invitational!!!
